    I have a 2013 TRD Quad Cab, 4L, 6SPD Manual Taco.
Ever since my 2nd oil change (16000km) the rear diff whines when I coast off the throttle around 90-100km.
The dealer told me repeatedly that it was normal, until my last service (68000km) when I finally dug in and wanted a ride in another Taco to prove it was normal.
They finally had to agree to replace the rear diff,

Has anyone else had this problem? I tried searching with no luck.

I had this problem when my rear diff was going in my 06. It was involved in a rear end collision and the repair shop fudged the install.

Did they tell you what was wrong with it? I think mine is doing this as well.

What does it sound like? when my Detroit exploded on me it sounded like a scrapping metal sound when I let off my gas.

I ended up down shifting at a high rev to really diagnose it and that's when she blew

They didn't tell me what was wrong with it.
I am assuming that they found some metal in the fluid, but I am just guessing.
Once I find out, I'll post it.

It has been a few weeks since they ordered the part, and apparently there isn't a new one in all of N. America.

Have the same issue. Went through two rear diff replacements under warranty, still didn't fix it.

Was just told by the dealership that it is very common and Toyota is working on fixing it. It will be released in the form of a recall.

They didn't give me any time frame at all though....

Mine has always done this! (At least I always thought it was the rear diff or SOMETHING drivetrain related. The noise stops if I put it in neutral). It never got any worse or exploded so I just started ignoring it. I changed the tranny & diff fluids recently and I'm pretty sure it still makes the noise. I didn't see anything odd while changing the fluids.

Man I hope it isn't normal. I travel on a lot of secondary highways at that speed, and it is all I can hear.

My 2014 Sport does it starting around 45 mph and stopping exactly at 60 mph. If you're going down hill with your foot off the gas and the truck is trying to hold back is when it happens.

Imo this is a ring and pinion that is not set up correctly. I notified my dealer, I'm only at 3200 miles, but I said that I would break it in before wanting it fixed. And yes, imo it's loud and not normal.

It's not that it is really loud, but once I have noticed it, I can't help but concentrate on it.

This is not a Tacoma, but you can kinda hear the same noise that I have in my truck in this youtube video. The difference is that mine whines when OFF The gas and is quiet when ON the gas.

Mine did as well (2012). Changed the diff and it was fixed. At least one TSB is out. This one may not be your year - but there may be later / updated TSBs

    TSB Reference #TSB-0057-13

Description: TOYOTA: ON SOME VEHICLES, WITH 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, CAN HEAR A WHINNYING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. MODEL 2005-2013 TACOMA. *PE

Well that is my year, except I have a 6spd Manual transmission.

The whine on my truck is also only when coasting, it disappears when I'm back on the throttle.

Yep, me too, it goes away as soon as you hit the gas and there is no back pressure on the pinion gear.

whinning noise can be a result of bad pinion bearing(s)or flange nut loosened up some throwing the preload off..
