A lot of it has to do with marketing.

The auto makers, put together certain "packages"; that they think would appeal to the masses, while also making a good profit on them.

It is also easier for the auto maker. It stops buyers from picking and choosing options; which could slow down production, even if was a second or two. Time is money.

I have an Off Road; but when I bought my vehicle; the only Tacoma's on the lot were Off Roads or Sports . Go figure.

I do believe as years have gone by and so many Tacomas were sold with either the Sport or Off Road package; the dealers in my area are getting in some SR5 trucks.

Hard to find a base model though. They want to make a few extra dollars, while they have you looking at their trucks.

Just look how the Factory limits options on base models.

    Marketing = Money

2013 doesn't have a limited slip...only the TRD OR has the locker. There is Auto LSD in the sports which is controlled by braking.

sr5 package has a limited slip differential and the fold flat seat is great on trips. I don't have a locking differential and its just got the sr5 suspension, but heck all I do is go fishing and build stuff around the house. I just didn't need the other stuff and saved some money. The thing runs like a top. It's a great truck

SR5 with tow for me. The only thing I wish I had was water resistant seats.

I prefer the SR5 ride over the TRD Sport. I feel the smaller diameter wheels and taller tires are more appropriate for my intended usage of a truck.

I think the SR5 has the 4 pack rear springs - some have complained about the 3 pack springs on the TRD OR.

Overall I consider those advantages for my needs.

I like the TRD fabric design but the water repellent feature is nothing to pay $1700 for. I think even Toyota states it can lose that property. Just buy a can of 3M fabric spray to get the same repellent properties on your SR5 fabric (and carpet). It's a LOT less than $1700!

I personally found the SR5 seats to be 'slightly' MORE comfortable - that's obviously personal preference and everyone's mileage varies.

Biggest complaint is poor driver positioning relative to the steering wheel - that's true of many cars and it doesn't matter what package you get. The SR5 and TRD packs get you telescopic steering but that only helps a little. Maybe they want it further away for the air bag - I don't know.

    ---

The SR5 also gets the Auto LSD. Automakers across the board have switched from mechanical clutch type limited slip units to auto, 'e' or electronically controlled LSD via brake modulation.

Traditionally lockers were open axles when not engaged - that's a liability on surfaced roads that are slippery (water, gravel, ice...). I would imagine (perhaps someone can confirm this) that they could provide the auto-LSD feature on lockers these days too - I don't see why not. That actually could give you the best of both worlds rather than the tradeoff.

Interesting. I also bought the SR5 over the TRD this time after owning an '03 Double Cab TRD. For the same reason; softer ride. I did get a 4x4 because it's needed often where I live and hunt. I like the long wheel base of the LB for highway ride. Regarding seat fabric I got a spot on the driver's seat (chocolate candy) and finally got it off completely using a microcloth with water and a bit of dish soap.

I am new here but my 2009 has sr5 badging on the tailgate with Trd sport decals (before I removed them). Reading the other posts it seems these are separate options, what am I missing?

They are exclusive separate packages (though there's a lot of overlaps in the specific options each pack includes). Some who have TRD envy may purchase the decals separately and apply them.

    Thanks

So, I prob have the sr5 badge? I have the inverter (bed outlet), 17 in wheels, blisteen shocks, color matched rear bumper etc of the trd sport package. Weird why anyone would just put the sr5 badge on the tailgate.
