i know this may come off as a dumb question but i really have no experience with stereos or anything like that, but im curious if there's any way to upgrade the sound (it just seems too low) but keeping the head -unit

i actually like the headunit, and the way i control it with my steering wheel but is it possible to just upgrade the speakers for better sound or is it a waste because it all comes down to the headunit?

you should put the year in the title so 2014 people can chime in about this...I have a 2010 that I replaced the HU in and bought a harness that allows you to use all the wheel controls...I wanted bluetooth...and usb ipod controls

    Bone stock for now....
Short answer, yes. You will need to add an amp and/or processer which will involve a line level converter. The signal output from the head unit is highly processed so simply replacing the stock speakers isn't much help. Do a search in the audio forum or maybe contact Crutchfield. I am in the same boat, but may end up just going with a new head unit anyway. Good luck.

Also, as previously stated, you can still use your steering wheel controls with an aftermarket head unit and a special converter.

I'm on my second tacoma. First was 1999 that I bought new and modded with pretty much everything at one time or another for 14 years. Toyota bought it back due to frame rust. New tacoma is exact same truck down to the black color with alpine nav/dvd, tint, de-badged, and softopper, so far.
I recently stuck an Alpine 7" screen Nav/DVD unit in my new 2013 with Rockford Fosgate components in the doors, old high frequency Genesis drivers on the dash and a Kicker Hideaway sub behind the seat. It sounds fantastic! Crutchfield will walk you through it step by step with great components at a fair price, patient tech advisers, all needed wiring and installation videos. It makes no sense sticking with the factory HU and speakers when there are so many other options that sound much, much better. You can even keep your steering wheel controls.
