Its been maybe 12 years since I've done the trail, so things may have changed since then. Even though pretty short (it dead ends at the lake), its a great trail. Like most trails, it is easy and narrow for most of the way, punctuated by the few 'fun' spots. For those who don't know, the lake is formed by damning the Rubicon River in a steep canyon area.

The trail starts high above the dam, and goes DOWNHILL to the lake shore. On 29's you might be able to bounce and crash your way down, but it would be a nightmare on a few spots coming back up. We had to tow a jeep back up, that twisted his drive shaft. We took turns with a strap. Took forever.

Back then, I had 33's, 103" wheel-base, locked up, and Marlin gears. I had no trouble at all, but lesser built guys had trouble.

At the bottom there is not much room for vehicles to camp. Once, our group had to split into two camping areas about 300 yards apart. You might want to limit the number of rigs.

Just thought I'd share my own experience.

but it's looking like I probably wont make this trip... not much fishing/kayaking time left after wheeling in from a morning start....

betcha MJon is happy I aint going; wont be doing anymore trash talking about him till next time!

Couldn't you just kayak to the camp site?

the campsite is at the end of the trail..... by the time we get there, there might not be enough time to fish....

    BTW: are you going?

I'm not sure if I can.

What I meant was, if the campsite is near the shore, you could park your Jeep at the beginning of the trail head and kayak to the campsite and trawl for fish all the way to the opposite shore. :)

On the way out the next morning, perhaps there could be a deal struck in which someone would carry you and your kayak back to the trail head.

Damn any updates? Is it related to having two diff size tires all the way home?

    Sounds good

I'm in for this! A little worried about my truck making it but chicks dig body damage so its all good. And hopefully good driving/line choice will make up for a lack of tires and lockers

It looks like most of us are coming from the Bay Area. I'm thinking we can meet in Fairfield around 7:30AM on Saturday, it should put us at the trailhead around 10AM. We'll run the trail, camp that night at the end, and run the trail backward Sunday and head home.

Let me know if this works for folks
