I'd love to make it however I'm committed to the Wheelchair Regatta at the Encinal Yacht club in Alameda.

I did it in 2011 and missed it last year to much regret.

Hands down the most humbling experience of my life.

The Wheelchair regatta is an event put on by the yacht club where volunteers will offer space on their boats to take wheelchair bound war veterans out onto the bay for a day. In 2011 we loaded a WWII Marine veteran onto a boat and saw him off. The boat took him out on the bay and out to the Golden Gate Bridge. His caretaker came back and said while they were out there the Marine said and i quote "The last time I sailed underneath this bridge I was on my way to Iwo Jima... I lost a lot of friends there..."

Scroll to page 14 and 15. This was the group of Chief's I was there with. I'm in one of the pics but behind someone and I can only tell because I was wearing Carhartts that day and I can see my pant legs

I highly recommend it! I was chatting up a former Marine that we loaded onto a boat. While we were waiting he was telling me a story about being on the Mighty Mo as a lowly Lance Corporal and a Captains and the Captains steward. He was on watch one night outside the Cabin and started dozing off. He said he kinda woke up at parade rest with the Captain standing in front of him. He clams he looked at the Captain and popped to Attention and asked how long the Captain had been standing there. He said the Captain said "Long enough, report to the brig immediately, you're relieved!!" He said he stood before the man (military jargon for a NJP or captains mast). HE was restricted to the Mo for 45 days and docked 1/2 months pay for two months which at that time was around $20 a month.

I'll have to check it out next year, hit me up and remind me. I dig talking to older folk, their wisdom is sorely needed in this world

Will do! I completely missed it last year as I never saw the request come our way and didn't know the dates. I'll try and find out next years and let youy know. BTW, this guy is always there and if you ever get a chance to meet him he's a rockstar!!! Just look up Mickey Ganitch!

I don't know where he lives right now. I know he was in a crows nest spotting the Japanese during Pearl Harbor. He lost 26 of his fellow Quartermasters in a a torpedo attack the night before the Japanese announced their call to peace.

Why so late? Is this a lunch BBQ or a dinner BBQ? Don't you need time to warm up the coals and set up and stuff?

If that's the case, I can come, but I'll be there by 230
