Haven't fished in probably 20 years. Still have all my old poles and reels though. Want to take the family out somewhere local so they can see what its like.

Local to where? Many options depending on where you live and I will assume you don’t have ready access to a boat.

Live in Roseville, outside of Sac. No boat access or available storage for even an inflatable.

What kind of fishing you wanting to do? You’re in a good area. Not too far from a little bit of everything.

Combine some really mild 4 wheeling with fish/camp. Head out Hwy 20 East from Nevada City and turn left (north) on Bowman Lake Road, just before Lake Spaulding. It goes all the through to Jackson Meadows Reservoir Bear Sierra City with numerous small and generally stocked lakes along the way. Cannot pass through in winter but good now. Nice camping and decent trout fishing. You don’t need a boat.

@Trikster if the mountains and trout doesn’t sound appealing, closer to home I’ve had good luck around parts of Folsom lake (mainly near Mormon island) from the shore. Also the Sacramento River near downtown. That’s a place you can find a spot and throw out some lines and relax. Multiple species of fish you can catch too.

I wait for my magic tides and go out at night around Alameda. Striper has been EXCELLENT lately. Nailed a good halibut last week

My girls hate camping. Kinda lame. Shore fishing with lures is probably up their alley. Something to keep them from getting bored. Catch and release probably good too. Personally, like fishing for trout and bass, but don’t have any preference for them.

The reservoirs up off 80 are nice for a day trip. Definitely my first choice if you wanna just go somewhere and fish. There are a couple reservoirs even just past Colfax in that area that are decent fisheries as well. I always had decent luck at sugar pine reservoir with a spinner. Easy trail that runs along the shore and beautiful scenery too.

Cut anchovies. I like to cut the head and tail off, then use a bait needle and thread my leader right through along the spine. Wrap with magic string and that shit stays on the hook

Plus, if nothing else is biting, that combo will pull sting rays all day everyday. Estimated (by others there that night I didn’t know) at 75lbs, earlier this spring

8lb test is plenty good. Mostly trout in that reservoir, but they’re plentiful and get fairly big.

For spinners, I’d get a few varieties..... at least a couple silver and gold mepps spinners would be a start. Since water temp is cooler now, they won’t be as deep so you don’t need super heavy/large baits. Bright colors are also good... pink, bright blue, yellow, etc.

If you’re going with the family, I’d tie on on a different spinner color/pattern for each person... that way you can see if they are feeding on something more then everything else.

You can also throw out some trout bait on a small hook/bobber. I believe the trout in sugar pine are all stocked, so they’re used to the dough baits and whatnot.

Can’t remember if I asked or not, had anyone used any of the Six Gill fishing products? They had a BOGO sale on some rods so snagged a couple. Figured two rods for $130 wasn’t a bad deal. They’re supposed to get delivered today but I’m out in Reno so I’ll have to try them out next weekend.
