I think I landed on a motor for the dinghy. Tohatsu 8 hp short shaft. I think it should have enough juice to run around the lakes and some of the calm parts of the delta. Deals right now are too good to pass up.

Nice, that should be fine for that thing, I believe the max you can legally put on it is a 15 anyway!

Yeah and I think 15 would be a little overkill. I just want to putt putt along, I don't need to be out running the Coast Guard...yet.

Read the first page and saw you guys talking about sturgeon. First one I caught was in San pablo bay, in about 6ft of so of water. I was 6 yrs old at the time I believe, and we were getting ready to leave, so my dad threw out my pole, with whatever bait was left on it, which happened to be just the shell of a anchovie head. Threw it out, and around 10 mins later, pole started screaming, I grabbed it and set it, then it decided it wanted to be a bird lol. All said and done, was 51 lbs and 54" long, taller than me, being the 4'2 or something, and it even had a Fish & Game 20$ tag on it! But good way to cook it is steam it with some dill, lemon and capers, definitely on my list of best tasting fish

Finally got a striper bite today and sure as shit set the circle hook. Wanted to cast right back out, had to leave so the boy could poo. Packin up watched pelicans and terns diving like crazy :angrygirl:

Yeah it took me a LONGGGGGGG time to get used to them. Like you, I had (and still have) the instinct to set the hook when I get a heavy bite. I only like them because they are easier to take out of a fish's mouth and I dont have to worry about a fish swallowing my bait. I fucking HATE setting the hook on a circle hook and missing the fish though... still do it often so I feel your pain. lol

Finally got my order into Tackle Warehouse, spent way more than I thought but should be set up for bass fishing in the delta.

Now shopping for two reel/rod combos. Want to get a good flipping/punching set up and then just an all around set up for everything else. Any suggestions? Or anyone want to offload any gear?

So fucking true. I don't even want to know how much I've spent on fishing gear over the last few years.

oh man, there's a million different ways to go about this, and most of it is based on preference.

I would say the best idea is to go in to a store and pick some up and feel them in your hands, but obviously that's not the easiest thing to do right now with the Covid stuff. If you're planning on dropping jigs/worms often, I highly recommend using a spinning reel/rod combo for that (Medium action, 6 to 7 foot is a good start). Also, luckily you don't need to break the bank on a decent combo... especially if you're just getting into it.

A reliable, cheap spinning combo could be: Pflueger Trion (or President) reel, paired with an Abu Garcia Vengeance rod

Another spinning combo example: Daiwa Regal LT paired with a Fenwick HMX rod.

There's honestly a million different rods/reels to choose from, and most of the time, you do get what you pay for in the fishing gear world. The higher in price you go, most of the time the better. More quality parts are used, stronger and smoother bushings/bearings, lighter weight, etc.

Yeah I think I'll keep researching and then be ready to purchase once stores re-open. I'd like to be able to physically hold what I'm purchasing in this scenario. There's just so much shit I honestly never even thought about. This must be why I've never caught fish in the past!

Anyone going out this weekend? I'm debating heading out to one of the Delta sloughs and floating up and down the banks for bass. Tide looks fairly decent for most of the morning/afternoon too, which is nice.
