So, you cast left handed, and retrieve with your right hand? Or are you casting and retrieving with the right hand?

I’ve had a few days of luck catching smallies on finesse worms with a semi-fast retrieve and a jerking motion. Don’t know what it mimics but they must love/hate it enough to nail it.

usually people cast right, grab the reel with left, then crank right. its alot of switching, but i think the consensis controlling the rod is easier holding the reel vs. the rod.

but just like the pros, you need to learn to cast and flip with both hands.

the last time i went on my uncle's boat, he was working the trolling motor with the shore on the port (left) side of the boat, and since i was in the back, i had to cast left-handed to get my worm to the shore. it wasnt that hard to do, but i wasnt casting super far or trying to be super accurate.

i heard stories of my dad practicing flipping into a can at his work, much like you see people practicing golf putts in the movies.

cast right and transfer hands to retrieve right. Sounds odd but doesn’t take a day to get use to it. I do it without even thinking. Usually transfer as the bait falls after hitting the water, if the fish are aggressive on the surface and are biting on the bait drop I’ll transfer just before I’m feathering the reel to minimize bait splash. Gotta be confident in your brake system so it doesn’t birds nest tho.

I cast with my right hand, reel with my left. My rod never has to transfer. More comfortable for me. Plus I’m a lefty but always threw with my right.

plus it stops people from wanting to borrow my reels when were out because left reel is another language to them.

Isn't that funny? That's another reason I love smallies. They are so aggressive with anything that comes around their face. In Oregon last week, I could see all the way to the bottom and when I would drop my worm down, I could see some of them would eat it only when it hit the bottom and was stationary, while others would only swipe at it as I was bouncing it mid-way through the water column. Super weird, but fun nonetheless. lol

I used to do this when I was younger and was just getting into baitcasters. I used to get so frustrated with birdnesting that I would tell myself; "NEVER AGAIN!" But it took a good year or so of practice to really master how the reel worked and now I prefer it over a spinning reel if I'm not finesse fishing. Casting around the yard and into plant pots really helped!

Ted nailed it. Cast right and transfer hands to retrieve right. It becomes second-nature almost right away.

I roll with the pawpaw spincasters if I’m finesse fishing. I don’t even attempt at casting anything light with my baitcasters. Not worth the frustration.

Yeah lightweight stuff gets sketch with a baitcaster. Lol. I learned the hard way (through money spent) that many baitcasters behave different too. For example, I’ve had some baitcasters that I could NEVER dial in right, even with the right amount of brakes and tension applied, while others, like my Daiwa Tatula SV TWS, can cast almost anything I have and is super forgiving with minimal brake/tension work.

Daiwa and Shimano (among others I’m sure) both have some reels with awesome technology that really helps with preventing birdsnests and whatnot so you don’t even really have to think about it. The more you pay, usually the better that technology seems to get. Lol

Practice. Practice. Practice. I finally got good at weightless Texas rigged senkos after probably two dozen birds nests haha.

I probably just jinxed myself tho :anonymous: :annoyed:

meh, i have plenty of other rods and reels that i take anyway every trip. Easier to just swap the rod to finesse. I take 4-6 with me each trip as it is.

this. Unfortunately fishing seems to be very true linear ‘the more you pay’ deal. Some good small companies have afforadable and nice gear tho. Gotta look for sales too.

I try to, but no boat :pout: carrying a rod for eachbait can get clunky hiking around.

i still swap out each bait on the rods but just keeping worms/finesse on the spincasters. But yeah hauling them around without a boat would be annoying.

I’m not great at tying quickly with braid. Plus, having a kid (now two :anonymous:) I can’t get away and generally spent half the time retying so I just started carrying multiple rods.

snaps bro. snaps! also Palomar knot FTW

i tie on these snaps on everything minus the spincasters because the worm heads have too small of a hole.
