I work in Hydropower up north of you (PG&E in the Drum watershed near Auburn, and occasionally Tiger Creek and Angels Camp). I’m just curious- given the number of postings that seem to come open...you guys are either staffed up like crazy, or experiencing high turnover. Just curious what kind of headcount numbers you have in Moccasin? Beautiful plant by the way, I’ve ne we been inside but whenever I drive by I am impressed!

We are staffing up for sure. Partly to do with the crazy storm that almost over topped Moccasin dam.

There have been more job postings in the last six months or so then the ten years I have been working here. Its been crazy. Not complaining though my department will be gaining two more positions that we’ve always needed.

You’ll also notice a lot of the job postings are for permanent temporary. So like full time for three years. Although I know of a handful of people who have been able to turn a temp job into a permanent one.

As far as the head count I think we are up to 250 or so. It was about 115 when I started... although a lot of those jobs are CIP related and will return to the city once our massive projects are finished.

The whole project is pretty cool to be apart of.

So what do you do? Operator?

I’m a civil engineer in our water and power planning group. Just recently started in this group. Prior to that I was an engineer in our water quality division. Both jobs up here though in Moccasin.

@nDub i was snooping around the current vacancies and surprised at the pay.
a lot higher than i expected for many of the jobs.

I'm looking to make a change from admin/research at an academic institution, and would not mind city wages in country living like you previously said.

however i am hesitant to apply to some of these because its a completely different industry.
i know the skills are essentially transferable to a somewhat similar role, and industry can be learned, but from what you have seen, does the city hire folks who do not have full on direct experience, but related experience in whatever job they are applying for?
in other words, do they allot for a learning curve or do they expect you to jump right in knowing everything as indicated in the job postings responsibilities?

Good question. I think it depends on the job and how many people apply for it.

If it’s super niche then I think they will hire and train up. Or if they only get a few applications for a job and they’re in a hurry they’ll hire and train.

And it’s a crap shoot on if and when they will or won’t. But it happens and I’m a testimony that it does. I had related experience to what I do now but it wasn’t direct experience. I also knew the people hiring and that can be clutch.

My advice is just shotgun it and apply for everything that looks even remotely like something you’d do and hope for a call back. Also tailor your resume to each job using key words from the job description.

Once you get in the door it’s a little easier to move around.

interesting, glad to hear you are hiring. Oroville is having a huge effect on us, lots of dam/spillway work on the way! It's good you can do short-term hires, we don't have that, so often we contract out which is a mixed bag!

I'm amazed you keep 115 people on a single project (although it's a big one!). All of our hydro group is about 800 total. I'm a Project Manager, work on engineering through construction of Capital projects of all kinds- civil, electrical, and mainly turbine and mechanical overhauls, runner replacements and the like. It's crazy interesting work, most of the machines we work on are 80-100 years old!

Would be good to talk shop off line if you are interested, I'll PM you my email.

It's a city wide job listing. We have at least two people who work up here in that job class.

If they quit or retired then we would hire off the same list that SFO is creating.

It's kind of convoluted but we can only hire off list and you can only get on a list if there was a job posting. Sometimes they fly new list for a job but most of the time they just interview people from an already existing list.

So yeah thats from SFO but we could also hire up here in Moccasin from that same list. This is true of all job postings with the city.

I'm getting ready to start a road maintenance worker position for the city of Roseville. My dream job would be for state parks.
