meh with all the hassle of removing u joints and the cost of the carrier bearing itself that is basically worth it.

Yea it's about 450 to have it rebuilt and balanced, so it seemed like the right path to take

Would a Ninja 250 be too gutless for highway commuting?
Im tempted to spring for the training courses finally and if i commute on a bike itll shave off an hour off my afternoon commute

I did this. I drove from Sacramento to Stockton for a year. I did 80mph, the bike was screaming at 14k the whole way. You will not overtake a car at any speed in the 250 tho. Oh I got 55-60mpg at that speed and rpm.

Now I figured out why there are RTT's for sale already. I found this comment on the '2.7 single cab' thread from a guy who is selling his. Very informative:

"The RTT is great if the last thing you do is set up camp. I like to get to my camping spot, set camp and then go fish, hike, wheel etc. That doesn't work with the RTT since its stuck to the truck. Sometimes its not a big deal but most the time it drove me nuts.

I also got a dog and he likes to be around me. I wanted the floorless shelter so I don't have to worry about him tracking in mud and grime.

Finding a spot for the RTT wasn't as easy as it seemed. With the tipi you just need a flat enough spot for you to sleep. If the rest of the ground isn't perfectly flat, who cares. With the RTT, if the truck isn't level then the tent won't be. Also, its a lot easier to tuck the tipi into the trees to get out of the wind.

Lastly, the RTT is huge. I have more sleeping space with a stove to keep warm in the winter with the tipi. It all packs into a nalgene bottle and weighs under 4lbs. I now use the same tent for everything. Truck camping, ice fishing, back packing, hunting, it fits all my needs. "

I would have to agree with the above post regarding camping. I have been camping solo/friends since I got my drivers license at the immature age of 16 and before that with pops since I was an infant(hippy dippy pops). When I was younger, i could sleep under the stars with little next to nothing. As i age it seems I add more to the camping equipment checklist. I now have 3 Action Packers full of kitchen/gear/safety equipment and more tents than I care to admit to. Having a wife who had never camped before until she met me, well, that was another challenge to add to the mix.

After experiencing a RTT firsthand, I can say it is not something for me. I have 2 dogs that think they are children and sleep amongst us. They feel its their job to snuggle in on the cold camping nights to keep us warm. A RTT would not allow for that. My last truck would have easily accommodated a RTT with its bed configuration. A typical camping weekend is where we arrive midday friday, go about setting up camp and then hike off for a sunset adventure. A RTT would necessitate the truck to be immobile for the duration of the camping stay unless I wanted to pack/unpack often. Again, not something that is within our camping style.

Truthfully, my wife wants a little towable Airstream. The 17' Tahiti model I think is what she was pointing out at the last rv show we went to. I just want something to tow that would serve us well way out in the boonies...

I see a trailer build in my future soon enough.

This. I had a 2005 ninja 250 for a while and its a fun quick bike on city streets but on long highway commutes its too slow. I had no hope of passing someone or even speeding up to get out of the way of someone trying to merge into me. Now if you are surfing regular California stop and go freeway traffic that might not be a big deal.
Gas mileage was great and kept costs down but there was a lot more regular maintenance.

However I bought and sold the ninja for the same amount even after I dropped it a few times so it was a great first bike.

Yes, it's gutless. But it's also a great first bike.

Get a motorcycle if you want one, but you may be overselling the benefit to your commute time. Yes you can use the carpool lane, and yes you can split lanes, but you need to allow time to do so and merge safely. What I'm saying is - you can move faster than a car does through traffic - but it's not the same thing as having the traffic magically not be there at all.

You won't be riding long if you're "that guy" who is splitting lanes at 55 between lanes of slow/stopped traffic.

Motorcycles are a lot of fun. But I gave it up after less than two years of riding after racking one up and scaring myself spitless.

This is true. It just means you unpack the tent last-on a multi-day trip to one camp spot, definitely a little harder. Having a trailer for the tent helps but it has it's drawbacks too.

I carry a couple of leveling blocks for this reason. Much easier to level the truck than find a flat spot for a tent in some areas. What can be a challenge is finding a spot in the trees although really not a big deal.

I also have a dog. Mud and grime haven't that big a deal for me. He sleeps in the truck. However, when he moves around, the truck shakes;)

You definitely want to find a solution that works best for the kind of camping you do. But I think in this case, I would prefer the RTT to the tipi or a tent in in-climate weather, especially rain.

Spotted in Petaluma, North McDowell area. MGM second GEN double cab with CVT rooftop tent over cab. What looks like SCS 8 wheels. Nice rig! What's funny is my wife actually spotted this truck yesterday and told me about it, I've got her spotting Tacoma's now as well :)
