I believe you have it backwards. Pretty sure the law is 70% of light transmission is required, which would be 70% tint. 30% tint lets in 30% of incoming light to penetrate the cabin.

    Correct.
Smaller percent means more tint and less light transmission.

70% VLT means that 70% of light must be able to go through the glass, meaning that the tint can only be as dark as 30%.
Below you will see 70% VLT. It depends on who does the windows and how they label it. 70% VLT is 30% tinted. Just like 5% VLT is 95% Tint aka Limo Tint.

VLT is the opposite of Tint.

:notsure: maybe I've always been told otherwise? Or these beers are kicking in..

No, 30% tint means it only allows 30% of the light to transmit. For 70% transmission you need 70% tint.

30% tint for sure means its letting 30% of the light through the glass. Thats why 20% is darker than 30%, its letting 10% less light in so it appears darker.

Common. VLT is what amount of visible light you are able to transmit through the window. Tint film, though, is opposite as far as percentages go. Legally you can't be lower than 70% VLT, but tint films are rates for what percentage of light they allow (not block!) to transmit. So 70% tint allows 70% VLT. 30% allows 30% VLT, 5% allows 5% and so on.

I'll add just a little more info on window tints in CA (purely because I've gotten more than one ticket for it). If you're bored or need something to help you sleep, look at CVC 26700-26712.

There are some film specific subsections about percentages farther down (where 70% is specified) but it requires letters of certification for having the windows tinted. For vehicles that have a factory tint on the driver and passenger window, it's legal because it is built into the glass and not applied aftermarket.

What I'm getting at...it depends on the LEO. If he's having a bad day or just being a dick, he can write you up for 26708 for any percentage aftermarket tint on the front side windows.

But for the record...this is coming from the dumbass that has 20% on his front side windows :anonymous:

IME, it's mainly the CHP that will pull you over strictly for tint violation. City PD seemingly only bothers to add it to a ticket for some other violation.

I concur. Both times I got a fix it ticket was by CHP in the bay area. Both times I did nothing to fix it. Just went over to local San Jose PD and they signed off the ticket. One time the LEO looked at my ticket and said..."Fucking CHP" and shook his head, signed off without even looking at my truck.

I got popped once on the last car for 35%, but have had 20% on the truck since purchase and so far so good.

My wife and I were on our way to Hollister for a TW meet. I got pulled over getting on the on-ramp to 680 by CHP...doing nothing wrong. I left with 4 fix it tickets.

I grew up in San Ramon, right off 680/Bollinger Canyon. Can't say I miss going back sometimes. CHP and Police are ruthless down there with nothing else to do.

Sounds about right. I used to get hassled by cops left and right for no reason. Decided to give my 4Runner a more discreet look, seems to be working so far as opposed to before with my exhaust, wheels, etcetc.

Once even got pulled over after making a full stop. I know I made a full stop because that specific turn/stop is very blind. Course he said I ran it. And of course its okay for him to run 3 stop signs doing 50+ just to chase me down.

    Damn.

I got ticketed by a Sonoma Co Sheriff who was speeding over an overpass at 4:45AM on a foggy winter day (pitch black out), I was merging off of the off ramp onto the street and he nearly hit me. When I went ahead with my merge, there was no headlights or sign of headlights on the overpass, which is why I guesstimate he was traveling somewhere near freeway speed. I ended up off the road onto the shoulder to avoid the accident, and he pulled off the road in front of me about 70 ft away. As soon as I passed his patrol car, he hit his lights and pulled me over. Said my 35% film clearly obstructed my ability to see out of my window and that's why we had a close call.

Then he spent 20 minutes circling my car (lowered and modified import, but totally legal except cleared taillight housings) and gave me a fix it ticket for both my tint and tail lights, no front license plate. My bumper wasn't drilled, so that was an easy non issue. I had to buy a spare set of tails and I peeled the film off in my driveway and then got the ticket signed off at the local SO.

I have passed parked city PDs and I've put 29k miles since I bought my truck in 2913, mainly highway in the Bay Area and haven't had a single instance. In fact, I had an issue with my truck once and was on the shoulder of 101 with my hazards on. CHP rolled up behind me and came up and tapped on my passenger window, asked if I was okay. I told him what the deal was and he said my windows are a little dark and that they weren't legal, I played idiot and said I just had them done and the tint shop said that was the darkest legal tint. :anonymous:
He didn't say anything more. Just returned to his cruiser and left. I'm positive he took pity on me as I was pretty pissed off being broke down on the side of the road in a brand new truck with 7k miles on it or whatever it was. Only time it's ever been addressed by an LEO. I drive differently now than I did before with the lowered car, and it's a truck, so I think I'm much less if an instant target. It also helps (IMO) that my rear glass isn't tinted over the factory smoked finish. Makes my 20% seem less dark than it is having the extra light coming in from the rest of the cab.

    No it's a federal certification.
There's another clause for medical purposes in that list of CVC's I mentioned earlier. It requires doctors instructions/note or something in the vehicle at all times.

Still, bottom line...if the LEO thinks the film is impeding your vision or driving ability, he has grounds to write you up.

My first window tint ticket I was at gunpoint because CHP "couldn't see me" with 50% tint on a sunny day.
