Ive shot a few before. All I know is that I bust a nut flacid ever time I pull the trigger. Im looking into pretty basic ones right now. Nothing too expensive.

If you are quick, you might still be able to get one of the 2011 colts with the special "100 years of service" rollmark.

If you're looking for an inexpensive yet pretty damn good for the price, look at Rock island Armory. They have a huge cult following on 1911 forums. Honstly, for the price, you can't beat it.

    That looks cool.

I've been wanting a gun for a while now. I should start doing some research.

What do you guys recommend for a first timer gun. I want something I won't get tired of shooting. O should I go to a range and shoot what they have there?

    1) Figure out what caliber you want
    2) Go to a range and rent as many as you can, all in said caliber
    3) Pick the gun YOU like and best fits YOU

As an example, Glocks have a huge following, yet I personnally am not a fan at all. I have small girl hands and the grips on the glocks are too big for me to use consistenly/comfortably (aside from Gen 4 with adjustable backstrap, but those aren't on DOJ roster).

Any of the big name firearms will take care of you as long as you take care of them.

They've got the historical 1911 model, and the really ornate commemorative model -- neither on the DOJ list for CA.

But the basic "1991" DOJ approved model has special rollmarks for all pistols manufactured during 2011.

Glocks, to me anyways, are very comfortable to shoot... Not to mention they are incredibly reliable weapons.

Here is my brother's current Glock, not the one given to him. Thing is incredible (Model G17)

There's enough glock pro/con argument threads out there, really no need to start it in this thread. My point was not to say glocks suck, but that every shooter is different and I identified ONE OF MY reservations/shortcomings with glocks. I can go into more, but what's the point? Each person needs to figure out what works for them. Glocks are great guns! But hand me a Sig and I'll outshoot myself anyday of the week over a Glock.

As for caliber, I shoot a lot, which is why most of my guns are 9mm. Ammo is cheaper and readily available.

Locally you can shoot at Targetmasters or Reeds. TM is closer, but I prefer Reeds if I'm in the neighborhood.

oh ok. My friend has a 40 and was recommending a 9mm cause of less recoil.

So the guns are pretty much the same size and it's just the caliber that differentiates?

My bad man, didn't want to make it seem that way. Honestly, I am just skimming posts today, so I didn't even know that you had posted something that could be considered negative. I'm not one of those guys that starts shit because of what you shoot. Everyone prefers their own style, which is the beauty of guns.

The frame should be relatively the same size for each of those models of Glocks. They do, however, have different models that are going to be compact. My best advice would be to start looking into this stuff, do some homework, go down to a local gun store and ask questions. See how they feel in your hand. See which one has the best balance/fit to your palm. Which has the best trigger pull for you. Best accessibility to mag release/safety. And figure out which caliber you'd prefer to have (keep in mind ammo prices). For example, 10mm is an expensive cartridge.

If you are completely new to shooting you wont notice any difference in them. I would simply go to the gun store and just hold them in your hand and just go by what feels the best in your hand. I think for a new shooter you definitely want a 9mm, It will be easier to handle and you will need to put a lot of lead down range to get proficient and 9mm will be the best price in a centerfire pistol, but IMHO if you are COMPLETELY new to shooting handguns and you have the extra cash to spend buy a 22 pistol as well. YOu can send a hell of a lot of lead down range for much cheaper with a 22 and get the basic principles of pistol shooting down. I am training with my 22 and my 9mm. I alternate between the two. the realllly light recoil of the 22 helps you to control the flinch. My 9mm is an XD and I love it. has never ever even hinted at a malfunction of any kind, and it is easy to take down and clean.
