I let my Minelab pay for mine.
Hell it bought mine and my wife's 4runner. All our toys to with them so far as well. When I want more I just go find some. :notsure: just happens!

How exactly does the whole prospecting thing work? Do you need to have rights to an area in order to detect and keep whatever you find?

I always stay on private land and get written permission. I also offer a percentage to the land owner/ care taker. Depending on how much you find makes the percentages change per property.
It ain't rocket surgery once you've done it a time or ten

    That's awesome! Nice work!

Money is a factor but not the whole picture. It's not so much money but that I make as much of my own shit as possible and I don't really know what I'm doing when I start. It just takes awhile....and sometimes I gotta redo shit twice. And I pick projects like adding a second fuel tank for driving around Mexico that take a while to put together. And I procrastinate.

Also, I have a lot of other hobbies that are time consuming and cost money. I scuba dive, mountain bike, back pack, rock climb (although not much lately), ride motorcycles and am slowly working through climbing all of CA's 14ers (6 down 9 to go). All these take time and money. For example I just bought a new to me used dry suit, replaced the neck and wrist seals on it,had all my tanks annual visual inspection, and my regulators inspected. That was $1400 right there. The suit+the undergarment it came with new are $4,000 so I can't complain too much.

Maybe it was a dumbshit hatchery worker who clipped the wrong fin. The adipose fin is still on the fish.
