Im sorry.......... but $40???? Get the FFFFFFF out of here. whatever happened to the $5 camp sites? I can't remember the last time I paid to camp somewhere, but that's insane money for a night on some grass.

Exactly. And I would submit that a Rubicon trip would be more satisfying mid week, as well.

For the last few years, I've gone later in the season. Sucks freezing your ass off but you generally have the place to yourself.

Meadow Lake (near by) has a couple of nice PG&E campsites along the lake. Hidden in the trees so a little warmer.

That's what it costs at a State Park. The BLM spots are around $20. I get that it costs money to maintain but damn, California is proud of its dirt but for the money, you'd think they'd put some back into the park.

Go to the north and Oregon has some of the nicest campgrounds I've stayed at.

But yeah, why pay when you can get serenity and poop with a view for free?

Yeah I don't mind giving the state some cash every so often if it means helping to maintain the beautiful areas we are able to visit, but yeah, at what point is it "too much?" Like you said, some of the prices just to park your vehicle and camp is almost swaying into motel pricing territory. Crazy!

When I lived in Arkansas I stayed at few state park campgrounds in Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana some other places. Amazingly nice! Super clean with all kinds of stuff like toilets and showers.

I still preferred dispersed when you could find it down there.

On the other hand as nice as those campgrounds are you're still in the south.

California puts everything in one pot then doles it out as they see "fit" which often leaves parks with barely enough to keep the lights on. At that point, I don't want to give the state any more money because they cannot adequately care for the parks even though they take in enough revenue to do so. I know that's harsh but it's the same way with everything that state touches.

Stayed at battle creek FS campground the other night on my way to Lassen NP, it was 18$. I thought that was alot after staying for free for a week on the M1 north of Lake Pillsbury, and in the Yolla Bolly area. There were flushing toilets and it was tidy, the host sells firewood rounds that he cuts.

Battle Creek is nice but super small. For camping like that i like West Shore or Rocky Point on Almanor. but $18-35/night

I was actually on my way to rocky point pge campground but alas the sun was setting. First time at battle creek and yes it is compact. A short walk east found the creek summer-dammed enough for a much needed quick dr bronners scrub for me and the pup.

I've stayed up around Lake Pillsbury as well. Just pulled off on a dirt trail and found a nice spot to set up camp. That whole area is nice. I get a weird feeling when I realize I have to sleep next to a bunch of random people at a campground. Partly why it's been so long since I've camped at a legitimate campground. Having toilets and some goodies like firewood rounds are nice though.
