I had just started reading TW. Purchased my truck in late January, but started reading maybe in December (knew I wanted to get the truck I’d always wanted...I guess that cancer changes your mindset and I was much more likely to just buy what I’ve always wanted. Plus we had to replace a car that we lost to arson last August). Lurked until late February...I had a lot of time sitting in the hospital after transplant and TW was a very welcome reprieve and gave me a lot of hope and excitement for doing something once I recovered.
I didn’t see the threads about your situation, but that’s pretty shitty. So disappointing.

Guy at work (has a Gen 1 access cab) just got back from a trip where he rented this Gen 3 Pro with GFC through Outdoorsy. Guess it is getting to be more of a thing.

I think it is becoming more of a thing. I was reading a RTT or No RTT thread where the OP was looking for pros and cons. Saw a post where the person said they just RENT a RTT when they need one.

RTT's are cheap enough to just buy; can't imagine what it'd cost to rent one, and not know the condition it's in only to turn it back in to the rental company and they say "this hole, tear, etc. wasn't here before you took it with you.."

Renting the vehicle though altogether is different and pretty cool.

Just hoping that this trend doesn't attract the wrong kind of people; I'm referring to the type that don't normally venture outdoors and don't know about packing out, etc

    A few things
I’m assuming storage of an rtt is the main reason for someone to not want to buy one.

Only reason I won't buy one is because of weight. If I had a tacoma, it'd be different because I could mount it on a lower bed rack - but on a 4Runner, it scares me. No sway bars plus a good amount of travel, with a lot of weight up top, doesn't mix too well when things get tippy. Been thinking about building a aluminum shell one life a GFC but that's on hold till I finish up a few other things first.

I know my statement was a rather bold one, but I'm referring to Tacoma's only since of course, we're on a Tacoma forum.

@MattJakobs I'd worry too, even if other people already do it. Don't think the top of a 4Runner was made to handle the weight of a tent plus people in it.

I know plenty of people who have had them on their 4Runners with no problems actually. Kind of surprising cause if you stand in the center of the roof, it's real flimsy. All about a good rack and good distribution.

Need to throw some 700# on the front. Running some heavier duty land cruiser springs on the rear. Unfortunately, doesn't get much more heavy duty than that for my application

700s might be too much, I'm at 660/tall springs and a little stiff/ruff as DD mode.
Definitely need aftermarket rack if going to RTT. Dont trust stock roof mounts.
Might look into Dobinson springs if you add more wieght. Not sure if they have dual rates for your yr, haven't looked.
I'm on my 2nd jump up with them now, more impressed than the FJ overland I had, travel and wieght handling.

Didn't realize you were in a 3rd gen T4R too...

I plan on doing 700s because group 31 battery, skids, bumper, and soon to be winch. I just added the battery - going from a group 27 - and ever since I've felt like I needed 700s. I'm sure I'll feel that way even more after a winch.
Been reading up on Prinsu and Sherpa racks. Aluminum which is nice, Sherpa uses a higher grade, but prinsu mounts directly to the roof. As in you take off the factory rails and mount it directly.
Out back, I'm running OME 0861 which are LC80 series lift springs. I had 8 wraps before and they started sagging big time after adding rear bumper with swing out and a drawer system.
