Classes would be really cool! If you can afford a little welder like the Lincoln 140 or equivalent you can really learn a lot by just watching YouTube and messing around! I bought a how to weld for dummies book and the spark notes is basically its mig dummy it's so easy I can't believe you bought this book, so let's talk flux and tig.

The hardest and funnest part is designing things and then making them. Just come up with something like ditch brackets or a fancy toilet paper holder and just start making things. You'll figure it out!

There are some really good YouTube videos. Especially the guys who take the time to filter so that you’re able to actually see how the puddle is advancing and what your penetration looks like. It’s about as close to what you’ll see behind the helmet. Speaking of which it will be handy to have an auto dimmer so you can see your starting point.

There are a couple of apps that give you suggestions for gas or flux core shielding settings. Your machine might be different but they’ll be good starting points.

Some junior colleges have welding programs but they may be difficult to get into due to demand. De Anza has Design and Technology program that includes welding. Cabrillo and Gavilan offer welding also.

You had me at puddle and penetration. A lil weird wearing a helmet, but i guess that’s just in case the puddle decides to splatter everywhere.

MIG/TIG spatters but the helmet really helps protect your face from UV and to prevent damage to your eyes. Nothing like finishing up and realizing you have the equivalent of a sunburn.

100% accurate. I got "sun burnt" super bad doing it in short sleeves one day. Highly recommend long sleeves and auto dimmer.

And don't forget to take the mask out of grinder mode.... that sucks too

I think I recall hearing that Cabrillo College does classes, but I haven’t looked into it yet.

An angle grinder is about all you need to start cutting and welding. Better make it two: one for cutting and one for grinding so you don't have to change the blades every time. I have a chop saw but I use the grinder to make all my cuts now.

I'm not sure how any of us could have a truck and not a welder. But seriously, buy the welder and start welding. It's super easy and you won't regret it.

A chop saw is a great way to cut stuff but one thing you need to be careful of is using it with wood or plastics. A metal cutting blade will spark leaving bits of steel on the table and the first time you drag a big piece of trim, you'll know :)

Asking for a friend. anyone have any recommendations for a good body shop in Bay Area that can also handle mechanical (axle/suspension)?

Fixt did an excellent job. They're on El Camino at Calabazas in Santa Clara. After the ass-packing in the truck, I went to a place on Martin. It's changed hands and is called Crash Champions--it was called Service King before. It's at 631 Martin. They can straighten frames and came recommended--truck is still going.

Honestly, I don't think either can do suspension/axle stuff. For that, I would look to South Bay Driveline. By that, I mean they can probably replace stock but otherwise, look elsewhere.

Clark Frame and wheel in Roseville is a bit of a drive but they're car guys and really know how to work on lifted vehicles. Ive been taking my truck there for years.

I threw a shaka to a sick metallic grey build today in San Lorenzo/Hayward area as they were turning left into a lot. Couldn’t take a pic lol

You guys hear about this? Mountain lion attack in georgetown killed a 21 year old and severely injured his 18 year old brother. They were antler hunting, really sad :( DFG tracked and killed the lion.
Born and raised in these hills going on 40 years. I've seen a few cats over the years, but they've always quickly gone the other way and I've retreated to the a vehicle. I guess just a reminder to always keep your eyes out when you're out recreating in the woods, especially if you're like me and do a fair bit of it alone. You never know what's lurking just out of sight. Stay safe people.
