I can attest for a lot of mufflers.... First one I put on was a magnaflow 14". I came from a 5.4 v8 f150 with dual super 44s.... I got a headache just driving home with the magnaflow on the 4.0 tacoma. It drones around 2100 rpm and won't change tone. Terrible on the highway since it cruises right around 2k rpm. Additionally it made a "growling" sound and sounded like a slightly deeper noise than my cat makes at people walking by the apartment. Also I felt imbarrassed, like I should be driving a ricer with a 12" spoiler and metallic/rainbowy rims... Sounded like a cheesy chain saw.

Next was a flowmaster 50. Much deeper, but not throaty enough, and definitely sounded like a 6 cylinder and still has a horrible drone....

Cherry bomb turbo... Stuck it up and didn't even weld it on, sounded like wind blowing through trees. That's literally all I can say about it.

Straight pipe... Sounds raspy, but deep and throaty closer to idle. Not legal and not an option....

Cherry bomb extreme.... Wow. Freaking louder than straight pipe. Sounds like a v8 and gives you a headache like nothing else, but it sure brings eyes to your truck.

Flowmaster Super 44. Yes.... Sounds like a v8, sounds deep, still has a tiny drone - I think due to the way the tacoma is geared and the lack of insulation. Had it piped out the back with a resonator and now it's quiet. I like a rumble, but after going through crap trying to get something to sound decent I'd rather have stock. This is almost as quiet as stock, but with a rumble. And I have power back too. I like it a lot. I would like to cut out the resonator and see what it sounds like but I'm telling you, these tacoma a just sound awful with anything but stock or close to it. If you're changing out your muffler, words I advice... Don't chuck your OEM muffler. Hang on to it and keep it until you know you like what you've done and then sell it to someone else.

End of story: if you're not going to spend 2k on a muffler, leave it stock or put a flowmaster on it (maybe even with a resonator like I did if you want it quieter).

Best of luck for anyone looking for exhaust.

Just looked up both of these on youtube on Tacomas. They both sound badass.
I'm kind of torn between them two. My decision has come down to these two, most likely.

The flowmaster super 44 sounds better on start up.

Looking at more videos, I think the flowmaster super 44 is the better choice.

Which one do you guys think between these two?

edit*: I think i'm stuck on flowmaster super 44. haha

I've never heard any exhaust that can make a tacoma sound like a V8... Ever ha and my magnaflow on my 3.4 isn't any drone at all which is why I like it might be different since you've got a second gen though

i was thinking of just adding a flowmaster and not doing the whol cat back, just remove the stock one and install the flowmaster, i wonder how a cat back system would compare to just a swap. i dont need stainless tips or dual outlets i want sleeper looks with a low grumble..that doesnt give me a headache

You won't gain anything from doing a whole catback versus swapping mufflers. And try not to get a straight through design muffler because you could lose torque.

That's why I don't go mudding, 1st gens are notorious for frame rust so I don't want to have a huge mess to clean and I would like my frame to not rot away.

buddy of mine just hooks up an old time sprinkler, sets it under the truck engine, lets it run for 30 min, moves it to the middle,30minutes, then the back/ cleans the whole underneath with no hassle and no real work.
