I know it's alittle late for this answer. But, you can always go to Livingston which is off I-75. It's about an hour from Lexington. Pretty good trails and there is always an easier route around the hard places. A "must do" there is "Plumbers Crack". It's not all that hard, but you will for sure want some sliders for it. There is also Slade (Natural Bridge) that has pretty good trails. If you don't know where it's at, you just hop on Mountain Parkway and you will run into it in about an hour 1/2. Alot of trails there, but it's easy to get lost in the wrong places because of stills and what not. Whites Ark is a must do, if it's still open. I know they have been toying around with the idea of shutting it down due to erosion and the fact that it's a natural bridge. There is also Carburator Hill. Easy to get body damage and rough terrain. Hope this helps if it's not too late.

For those of you who watch the news and know where I work at, yes we were robbed. I was right there when it happened. It wasn't me actually me but it was one of my tellers. Probably the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me. No one was hurt or anything like that, but honestly was it really worth the small amount of cash that they got to possible go to jail for 20 or so years. People are fucking retarted!

damn, glad you and everyone else are ok. people are taking more and more risks to make a quick buck the wrong way. doexnt matter where you live or where you work anymore. kinda scary. no wonder im progressively getting more and more paranoid about protecting my family and my property.

Yes, it was just money and today I realized it wasn't worth a life or someone getting hurt to protect. 3 banks have been robbed in my area within the last week. You always think that it wont happen to you, and then it does. It can happen to anyone. This really really has motivated me to get a handgun. I mean I do have my shotgun, but if someone was to break into my house while I was home, getting the shotgun out isn't always that practical. That and they better be dead in 2 shots or I'll have to reload. But all my co-workers and myself are very greatful no one got hurt. I feel really bad that it was my new tellers second day on the line. I hope she comes back b/c shes a great person and did everything by the textbook.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
damn man...crazy stuff. i feel if the economy doesn't improve soon, we'll see more & more of this.

Neil, just a quick reminder about getting a hand gun. protecting your property (or someone else's) is NOT a justified use of deadly force...except maybe in Texas. (castle doctrine law they have) you must prove after the fact that you or your loved ones were TRULY in fear of your lives. i don't agree with this approach as it reminds me of a "no-knock" warrant that police use...it's like "we'll take a look around and if there's anything we want, then we'll take it, if not, there's nothing the homeowner can do to us LEGALLY". of course, it's complete BS. to me, it sends a message to would be robbers that even if the homeowner has a gun, if he uses it, as long as i don't have a weapon, i'll be cleared and then myself or my family can sue them if the kill/wound me. this would be the bad part of the united states justice system...even dirtbags have rights. our system cannot work any other way unfortunately.

might i suggest a taclight or small high lumen handheld flashlight. most home invasions will happen at night. don't be tempted to turn on the lights...the taclight will give you an advantage in the dark. the perps eyes will be adjusted to dark conditions and an extremely bright light will give you at least two seconds to make a decision, as the perp will be temporarily blinded. i prefer a handheld. this gives you the option of using a low stance and holding the light high, or far off to one side or the other, in case the badguy has a weapon and decides to fire blindly into the light. also, if possible, make an announcement to the asshole in question letting them know that you are armed and prepared to defend yourself...a pump action shotgun loading a round will have the same effect. if you want to get nutty, like i have...simulate a break-in with conditions as they would be in a real situation. :)o yes, i have practiced a room clearing starting in my bedroom all the way to the front door) it may sound a bit overkill, but as the saying goes "he who fails to plan, plans to fail". also very important: know where you can shoot. most any gun will penetrate at least one wall, potentially harming someone you don't intend to.

about the gun...everyone who owns a gun is convinced that the model they have purchased is the best. asking for help deciding on a forum mostly ends up an arguement about what gun is "the best". they all have pros & cons. go to your local gun shop and talk to them about it, get touchy-feely with as many models as you can...buy what feels natural in your hand. do some "pull ups" with them. by that i mean, hold the gun at rest, then quickly bring it up into sightline as you would when firing. you'd be suprized at how some handguns will just "flow" right into the sweetspot. nevermind if they look at you like you think you're Rambo at the gunstore LOL i learned the hard way that you should THOROUGHLY examine any firearm you intend to purchase. they all have imperfections (obviously less as the price goes up) that can be noticed with an examining eye.

then there's the caliber debate  no matter what you hear, a 9mm will most definately put someone down...has been doing so for decades. don't worry about being outgunned, worry about being outshot. (this coming from someone who's rarely gotten in any practice of late...damned ammo prices) it doesn't matter if the person you're up against has a .500 smith & wesson if they can't hit what they're shooting at. this means, once you get the gun...practice practice practice. i know it goes w/o saying...but 100 rounds isn't enough to get familiar IMO. i used to shoot my .40 all the time a few years back. i got pretty good with it too. not so much these days :( lately, i've been trying to get some trigger time on my newer FiveSeven, but again...the ammo is $25/50rds., so i haven't gotten nearly enough practice with it yet. i'm slowly building an ammo stash for it so i can shoot it more. right now, if something happens, both guns have loaded clips and are close by, but i'll grab the .40 because i'm better with it. .......well, i've seemed to really blow off on this subject :) i'll summarize with what i feel are the major decision factors when purchasing a handgun.

    "Feel"
    Reliability
    Capacity
    Weight
    Ammo availability
    Initial cost
    Ammo cost
    Safety features

PS: it's good to hear that everyone is OK at your bank after the incident.

Glad to here you are okay and no one got hurt!

As far as a pistol I would say go down to the range with me and Wade some time. About every time I go down to Randy's range there is three or four people always asking if I would like to shoot there firearm. I am really big on reliability if it does not fire when you need it what is the use of having it. Or next time Wade comes out we can have him bring his glock I think it is a model 23 .40. He also has a 38 442 that he carries. His Glock has a 9mm barrel and clips to be able to shoot 9mm too.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I've really been on this handgun kick lately but after today for some reason I have the "it could happen to you or the what if" statements stuck in my head. So I'm sure the next time I have the extra $$$ that will be my first purchase. But yes I am truely grateful that no one go hurt, that is my biggest thing. Its just money. Money cannot bring someone back to life. Someone was watching out for me and my co-workers today!
