What is the tax relief you speak of? I'm new so I am not familiar with it... I have prolonged registering my truck in VA because I am not home all that much and I knew it was only a matter of time before I traded it on something 4wd.

 

Well, I'm fucked... with my work/travel schedule, I'll be lucky to get 8k miles a year..

 

just look at the picture i posted earlier when i started this worthless rant, they have an original "tax charge" and then a "tax relief" to make you feel like you are getting some sort of break while the government bends you over and doesnt even use spit.

 

So true.. PPT is a ripoff.. But alas, the county and state will get there money somehow. I guess I can't bitch too much though, it does pay my wife's salary being in the fire service.

I say abolish ppt, and tax road usage for non VA residents (excluding active mil).

Would you rather pay a County based income tax the way MD does it? Or 10% sales tax the way some states/counties do it? Or a ton of excise taxes nickel and dimeing you to death piece meal the way other states do?

The personal property tax “relief” you are disparaging was started by Governor Gilmore as a step to abolish PPT completely. Everyone hates it so he was getting rid of it. Next election cycle the other political party came in power and stopped that movement. They did not reverse it, so the $20k worth of relief still shows.

But even if it had continued and PPT went the way of the Dodo, they would have just replaced it with something else. Sales tax would have gone up, income tax would have gone up, car registration fees would have gone up.... something would have replaced it.

The King will get his taxes regardless, it is just a matter of how.


You have to look at total tax burden state by state. If you do, you will see that Va is about in the middle.

 

This is true... I was surprised to learn that the VA state income tax and sales tax are both lower in VA than they are in SC. My insurance, surprisingly, is also cheaper in VA than it was in SC.

 

I miss that guy. He did all the trails looking for us and then followed us through them, definitely a good sport
