I've moderated a few forums and these guys make me cringe. I can't count how many times I'll see a post and do a double take when I see the moderator flag. Be an adult for crying out loud!

So the question is do I buy the super convenient all-in-handset 15w model or the more powerful 40w model...

I had that internal debate too. Figured if I was the only one with the most powerful one then it was kinda pointless. Plus no weather on the 40 watt for some reason. I think the few of us that bought them went the 15 watt route.

I heard that this one is very good. And only $50 more than the 15w on Amazon. And it can do ham and gmrs.
    https://www.amazon.com/BTECH-Mobile...ld=1&keywords=50w+gmrs&qid=1592534824&sr=8-11

Apparently Im a glutton for adding a bunch of comms to my truck and running out of room. Ill get ham eventually and cross that bridge when it comes

I think I just like the design... it was super convenient for CB because my Uniden had the exact same design. I'm thinking the ~4dB gain (on UHF no less) when this will only be for trail comms isn't worth finding a mounting point in view when I can just stuff the 15w just about anywhere.

It's really convenient now that it's online. I spent about 8 hours on hamstudy.org going through the 10 sections and went 35/35 on my exam in about 5 minutes. They are using zoom unfortunately but still better than going somewhere in person.

Yeah you do a zoom session while sharing your desktop and they watch you via webcam. Best part is my license was in the system less than 24 hours later. There's like 9 groups or so hosting tests now but I highly recommend the guys up at MIT when you're looking through available sessions. Super chill dudes and a couple of them reached out after to congratulate me once I appeared in the db.

I was straight bombing practice tests until I started going through one section at a time in study mode. Keeping material related instead of letting it mix in all 10 sections made it much easier to recall material. It's been a long time since my electronics classes.
