So I normally change my oil but the last time I had jiffy lube change it. Now that I’ve drained my oil I’ve realized either they tightened the housing to tight or the heat cycling tightened it to much for me to remove by hand. So I’m thinking I just put the new oil in with the old filter, order metal housing/special socket for next time. My question is, do I change as soon as I get the new tools or can I go another 5k then change (I normally do 10k intervals)? The oil filter on it now from jiffy lube is a k&n performance gold (pt#m967) and their website says 7-10k+ mile interval. Any advice would be appreciated!

Just realized Im at 40k and jiffy lube did oil change at 32k so I’m thinking I can go at least another 2k and stay within recommendations.

Stab a screwdriver though it and turn it that way. BUT the filter breaks down way before the oil. I would get it swapped.

It's different for a third gen. They have that reusable plastic housing and only the paper filter gets replaced. Probably don't want to stab that lol

SO if they have the same filter as the 4runner, which i think they do, then a normal ratchet should get it off.

A normal ratchet will get the drain plug off of the filter housing however a special oil filter wrench is needed to remove the housing to access the filter media. And also unlike the second gen Tacoma, we must crawl underneath the truck to access the filter...

@03dumdum I have the oil filter wrench if you'd like to borrow it.

Get the tool and then change the oil; the wrench is 12$ on Amazon. Do it once and be done with it.

I appreciate it @2016Taco4Me, I’m gonna order the wrench (and metal housing) then do another oil change when I get it in. I’ll call it a 45$ learning experience. @ilubtimmyhos a huge socket might work but I don’t have one big enough for it. This one is almost identical, but ours have more fins and are plastic. I tried using a hammer/extension to knock it loose and broke one fin so decided to stop before I cracked the housing and was out a truck waiting for the part. The drain plug was almost hand loose but it seems like super glue was used on the housing haha. 0A3C3CF0-B6DE-421A-8844-CFAAD9AB6E49.jpg

This is certainly not a cheap option, but I just ordered one of these for each of my Toyotas. One more overtight drain plug in the filter housing and I think I'd loose it

There are torque specs for both the oil filter drain plug and oil filter housing. The torque spec is also stamped on the bottom of the filter housing.

    Oil filter cap torque:
    25 Nm / 18 ft lbs
Oil filter drain plug torque: 13 Nm / 10 ft lbs

Didn't help last time on the Wife's Truck. Torqued to spec and after a few months, I couldn't get the drain plug out even once I removed the Filter Cover. Didn't want to crack the plastic filter cover in the vice, so just left it alone and ordered up the replacement. Should be here in a few more days, so I'll only have one more really sloppy change.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
This looks like it was a pretty clean truck for a 2008. Being parted out.

Just looked at one of them new bronco’s while waiting on a coworker to pick me up.

I don’t know about that little thing.... maybe built, might be a different story for looks. but as it sets on the floor. A hard pass.

    that is all.

Oh yeah. That one is for intrepid soccer moms. That thing is built on the Ford Escape platform. It's the big 'un everyone is waiting for.
