Like other mentioned, keeping under 200 is ideal. I have my alarm set to 205 (4th gen 4runner, so a750f like the 2nd gens). on I81 past Roanoke it gets pretty hilly and it can climb above 200, which is one of the reasons I'm installing a trans cooler hopefully this weekend to bring those down. Also above 200, the shared trans cooler/radiator will bring engine temps up too and heat soak the radiator making it harder to bring both temps back down. On flat highway, it will stabilize around 185ish, but once it gets up in temp, it takes a while to get back down

For an automatic and controlling temps, its also important to understand the converter lockup. When the converter is locked, engine output and trans input spin at the same speed. When unlocked, the engine output and trans input spin at different speeds (think not locked together). When the converter is unlocked, the speed differential inside the converter will build heat quickly. Ultragauge does have a metric for this (1=lock up, 0=unlocked), but I find it to be wildly delayed and inaccurate. Instead, I usually watch the tach and when the converter unlocks, you'll notice rpms jump 200-300 without speed changing. When it drops a gear, you'll jump usually more than 500rpm depending on speed and notice speed increase a bit. Also with the converter locked, you'll notice a more linear relationship between throttle position and speed. At least on the a750f, the converter will lock in either 4th or 5th (OD). In 5th it will unlock if you even look at a hill funny. I then usually manually down shift to 4th if its a big hill, let off pedal for a hot second for the converter to lockup, get back on it, and it will zoom on up without building too much excess heat. in 4th, it will hold lockup up even super steep hills

Its probably a similar for the 3rd gen tacomas just with an extra overdrive in there. I think might have the +, - thingy instead of the individual gates for each gear, but should be the same deal

example of the rpm stuff (ignore trans temp in this pic, wasn't from a really long drive):

Fuck, this is off topic, but at 70mph on the speedo, is that your cruising rpm? (like what is normal everyday driving looking like)

At 60 on the speedo you should be at like 70mph. So 70 on the speed is like 81 lol

So at 70mph manual correction (60mph being 70mph) Im at 2100. That aint bad for 315s and 529s.

Lol yep, I’m not in any rush when I’m on the highway. I purposefully overgeared to leave room for 37s in the future if I wanted to.

So Im not sure if mine is corrected. All I know is 60mph on the speedo feels slow as fuck (I also have the "largest" or "Lowest" gears for the 3rd gen, for the same reason)

    Thanks dude!

I gotta little ambitious with my tire purchase, so those wildpeaks may be gone soon. :sawzall::sawzall::sawzall:

Thanks to the slightly higher OD ratio of the automatic, 4.88s puts 70mph on 35s to 2400. I'm hoping the extra 500rpm at speed will hopefully put in a slightly better power range
