    I want to talk with you guys about this. Particularly Ben and Monte but this is valid for all those who haven't done much of it (Adam, Mark, maybe Ian too :notsure:)

    I think we all agree that airing down is the smart thing to do. It increases traction and also protects the tire from damage. However, doing this means you have to air back up when you drive on pavement. This is not normally a problem but it may be when we are at Moab.

    This is smart thinking. If you air down to less than 20 psi do not drive that way on pavement, especially for long distance.

    50 is way too fast for an aired down tire. I try to keep it below 35 mph but its hard. 40 mph is my absolute maximum.

    Still too fast IMO

    You are asking for trouble, especially on twisty roads with no swaybar.

    Running an aired down tire at high speed (+40 mph) does generate a lot of heat in the sidewall that will shorten the life of the tire. It just isn't worth it.


    Ben, stop stressing over not having OBA. For the amount of wheelin you do right now, its not necessary. Certainly for the Moab trip its not necessary. There will be plenty of us who do have portable compressors that will take care of you.


    Monte, they are your tires but if they were mine I would not disrespect them by running at highway speeds when they are aired down.

    FWIW, if the trip on pavement is more than just a short jaunt, I will be airing up for the trip. Its either that or drive at 35-40 mph.

    I'm not sure how far it is to Canyonlands/Elephant Hill from where we will be but I'm pretty sure it is far enough where I don't want to drive 35 all the way. Monte, you can go 50 if you want but I'm betting that it will be quite a challenge for you not to try to keep up with me when I go by you at 65+ mph. :D

    Honestly Mike I havent aired down in my previous adventures. I like wide tires because they "float" on sand and snow. but for Moab I'm sure I'll air down to somewhere between 15-18 psi. And I agree with you that highway speeds at sub 20 psi is a bad idea and dangerous for yourself and those around you.

    I what is necessarily worry about it I will end up actually getting 1 before the meet anyway. If you want one than get one. It is your money. But with all the trucks out there there should be enough.

    I suspect that the conditions will mandate airing down. The right amount will vary depending on truck/tire combo and driver comfort. You may find that even 15 psi is to high. We will see.

    Carrying a compressor never hurts. You may find you have more use for it than you realize. Not sure what your budget would be but I would not go too cheap. The really cheap ones wont last very long and struggle to air up tires bigger than 31"s. I compromised and spent $60 for my ViAir 90. It is going on its 3rd wheeling season now. Turned out to be a good choice.
