    +1

I'd be happy to help organize something. They've already closed about half of it.

A bunch of us are going to be up there in June.

As far as I have seen, people have been doing a pretty good job on the pipeline. Of all the public lands that I visit regularly, it seems to be very clean up there. So, maybe they don't feel that they need any help. We'll see...

Some of us are fine helping to maintain the trails that we enjoy using. If that helps keep more of the trails open, I’m all for it.

Yes, agreed. But, we're probably never getting those sections reopened. We're better off focusing keeping open what we can. :)

Ok. Some of the sections were closed due to becoming giant mud pits. I don't know how you plan on getting those reopened, but I'd love to hear the plan.

I'm guessing they could be repaired with truckloads of fill dirt. There is a pipeline group on Facebook though. It shows the people that ruined it to begin with. They built monster trucks that would tear up anything's then the decided it was great fun to play in the mud pits all day long, digging those pits ever deeper. Open those trails back up and they come back and do it all over again.

    Here's a perfect example:

There are some small rivers/creeks that flow through the area. I think they closed some sections due to pollution, ie mud flowing down the creeks.

That's why they built bridges in the 90's when they almost closed it down.

I was unaware of that. Damn the fucking creeks!

Hmmm, or just install large culverts...

Well, back in the '90s they built bridges over the creeks to stop the pollution. I'm not sure why those sections got closed off again..

Edit: not sure why I thought we were talking about littering.. edit: oh, because it was mentioned in post #924

It seems like they decided that the area is too sensitive to pollution and erosion, so they just shut down the off-roading in those sections. I don't have anything against mud pits. Even though mud isn't my number one priority, I do enjoy a good mud pit.

So, are you suggesting that the solution is to fill in the creeks and rivers that flow through the pipeline with gravel and dirt?

But Dennis, BSing is what we do so well! Especially after drinking too much on a Friday night.

FWIW, I think we all generally agree to your initial proposition.

I'm not BS'ing about anything. What I'm saying is that we're better off focusing on keeping what's left of the pipeline open.

They built 2 bridges over it 20 some years ago. And, then they closed it again. I'm guessing that filling it in with a backhoe isn't going to solve the issue.

From what I remember, there was a fear that the actual pipeline was going to get exposed due to how much some areas were getting torn up. Back in the late '70s, we saw some truly stupid crap going on, mostly a couple of miles south of Crooked Lake, but some also just south of Hwy 64.

Ok, so how do you propose that we reopen those sections?

The actual pipeline has supposedly been exposed at some point. But, the reason it almost got shut down back in the 80s or 90s was because people were crossing the streams and polluting them. That's why a bunch of off-road groups got together and built bridges.

How we move forward from that, I do not know.

Back it down a notch, would ya? We'd be interested to see what comes of your conversations. James likes to jump in both feet, he's passionate about the trails. Who knows? Maybe something positive can come of this.

Yeah, one of the things I heard was there were too many fools going out there and putting holes in oil pans and tearing up axles, dumping a shit-ton of oil. The DNR will put an end to that right quick.

IIRC, even after the bridges were built, there were fools that refused to stay on the trails. Even the threat of big fines didn't stop them. Damned shame.

    Well damn.

    Let me start over. Please

I want to try to preserve the few trails we have.

@Peeing on jeeps I know you love exploring and trails. I don't even know why we're disagreeing.

The Pipeline is a special place. But, a lot of it has been shut down due to environmental concerns. I think we both want to keep as much as possible open for the future.

If we can do our part to keep things open, I'm all for it!
