Replace the automatic with a stick axle wrap won't bother you any more. Want to see a bed move around drive a Chevy. Want to feel gas slush around in a tank drive some thing that holds 35 gallons and has a steel tank.

most are fitted with internal baffles, however they do not extend from bottom to top as they are mainly used for keeping fuel near the pump when the tank is low. If your gas is "thudding" then you're slamming the brakes. Sloshing gas will not thud unless the tank is loose.

someone had mentioned this to me as well and it kind of makes sense. If I come to a stop going under 20mph it's fine. If I come to a rapid stop, when I let off the brake I get a "release" of something that i can only feel in the cab, no "thud" or noise, almost like the drive-line is preloaded and then released. I can also put it in neutral and get the same result.

Just researching the Tacoma "clunk" on TW, Chris4x4 explanation made the most sense to me:

"Mostly what happens (with automatics) when you are stopping, power is still being sent to the axel. As the power is being sent, the pinion angle moves up, and when stopped, the brakes are holding it in that position. When the brakes are released, the axel is free to return to its original position, causeing a "Thump". "

As for as a fix,:notsure:, but doesn't hurt to try the cheapest route by greasing the drive shaft.

where the thump is annoying as hell. The vibrations from 20-30mph and 55-70mph are what really drives me nuts. Took a friend to pick up his car, he said dang man whats wrong with your truck? pretty embarrasing.

didnt read through all the replies that people have posted but i know a few have mentioned balancing your tires, its good to have them balanced every few thousand miles due to wear and sometimes uneven wear.

another one that i havent seen but sure has been mentioned is that your drive shaft might need to be checked too, make sure that it doesnt have any dents in it.

Can't believe this hasn't been said yet, unless I'm blind, but this guy^

He's right. Check your u joints. I had the clunk and vibrations of which you speak at certain mph. Replaced rear u joint last week & no vibration or clunk. Jack up the truck & wiggle the Driveshaft. You should be able to feel play.

I had a 55 gallon Titan tank (unbaffled) in my '06 Duramax and never felt a "bump" from fuel.

3inch front 2inch rear lift with add a leaf and extended brake lines trd exhaust
For your thud when coming to a stop or taking off mark the two pieces of your rear drive shaft and slide the two pieces apart and put some grease on the splines of the slip joint that should help a little

FWIW. Went by Discount tire right by the house to have them inspect tires and balance. They said they wouldnt balance and align because the tires were coned. He said they were fairly cheap tires and were not properly aligned. THey suggested I replace.

So after checking around - with rebates, the toyota dealer was about the cheapest in town and i could get them to make sure they understood all my issues.
    I went with a set of michelin's ($150 rebate)
They showed me where i was slightly low on tranny fluid and I had a small leak so they replaced the tail shaft seal.
While I was there (and had a coupon) I had them replace and resurface front brakes.

Ride is smooth like it should be now. Shifts so much cleaner than before and the
all the shakes and vibes seem to be gone.

...actually, there is another thread addressing the "thud/thump" thing, ...there is a TSB that was put out for it... I have noticed this on my Tacoma for some time now, ..it's an annoyance... I just don't know if it's worth taking it to a dealer to address it or not...
