Yes we all have a differential. Do you have a locker on the rear?

Lol. Differental is the generic name for the gears inside the front or rear axle. 4x4 has front and rear diff. RWD has rear diff only.

I'm in the wrong thread but I have a 2wd prerunner sr5. I do a lot of forest roads and trails, but no crawling or anything obviously. I've overcome most of my limitations by adding good tire's, an Eaton TrueTrac LSD, air compressor for tire's, and mounting a hidden winch tomorrow.

4 wd isn't necessarily needed in all situations, kind of like a gun. Better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have one. Same with 4wd if you seriously off road.

Really the ability to put your truck in 4x4 low is the most beneficial. 2x4 can get you around but lo is nice for those major inclines.

75% of the TRD owners will never ever EVER use their truck to its full capability. You probably made the more rational decision.

heres an another question for y'all.......if i mod the truck, will that affect my insurance not covering? i have the original manufacturers warranty bumper to bumper for the first 36k miles. after that I have an extended warranty through USAA. I'm thinking if i mod stuff like lift, tires, seats, etc. they might not cover me? any advice or knowledge on that? thanks. y'all rock.

For most of us this is our daily driver and how we pay the bills. To go out and risk breaking it every weekend seems dumb to me but some people have money to burn or like working on their vehicle. I don't have that kind of time to sit around and wait for my truck to be fixed and I don't need to conquer 6 foot waterfalls to have fun either. So to each their own, yes I wish I could go to some of those places but I also know the limitations of the truck I purchased.

If you present all of that paper work for the mods to your insurance it will be covered, your rates may go up a bit but should be covered. If not they can be covered in a renters insurance policy or home owners insurance policy I believe.

I'm with you. Wife's rig will never do that. My 4runner cost me $5k. I'm not that worried if it breaks. It's for fun. Just showing what a non trd open diff can do.

That said. Nothing has failed on me yet when wheeling. Toyota life. Not jeep life.

Not silly at all! Mod to your hearts content and build it to your liking! Look at the bright side at least you don't have the ugly electric shaver grill we have or had to toss .
I'm pretty sure the folks out there that have 4X4 versions is because they need it on a regular basis like living in a region where in the winter months you gotta plow through snow , or folks who like to have the extra wheels moving to climb over curbs , rocks etc etc... For the daily Joe 4X2 is better imo , less moving parts, less weight, less to go wrong, less maintenance ,lower insurance rate etc..

Welcome to Tacomaworld aka Take my money!

    Open diffee
Not true, with the VSC, and lsd, and track, system. Only way to get open diff truly is to disable those 3 things. You can but they will override and come back on once you are above 30 MPh. Then you risk overheating all of those components, transmission, differential and brake systems

I have an SR5 and I love it. I've made some minor mods, but I think the truck looks good in stock form.
    IMG_20170326_142151833_HDR.jpg
    Here's mine so far ...
    Lund black oval nerf bars
    Toyota bed mat
I might get a set of weathertech mud flaps.
Overall mine still looks stock, but it's 'personalized'.
One suggestion, right after I got my truck I put 2 coats of McGuire's Ultimate Wax on it. It looks great, protects the paint, and it's inexpensive!
