I check the oil every 3 or so fill ups at the gas station because it's usually a level spot there. Mine is at 12,000 miles and been changed 2x I have never added any oil between changes so far.. not going to judge anyones car care routine but with an engine that doesn't use oil monthly should be fine, and you should check the tire pressures too. It's a good time to top off the washer fluid too.

So here’s the deal I didn’t ask anyone how often I should check my oil I asked how often others do as mine has never changed. I retired from Caterpillar, I was a service tech for Caterpillar for 20 years working on gen sets worth 5-6 times what I payed for my Taco or more and I paid a lot. I never started an engine ever without checking the oil……ever. I was taught well and it saved my customers and me on more than one occasion. Just like it took me months to break the habit of waking at 4 am every day I’m currently at 5:30. I had to break the habit of checking my oil way too often as well so I asked the question how often you not me checks their oil. $YODA$ Don’t be a Dick, I know it will be hard at first but soon you’ll be sleeping in rather than getting up at 4…….. you can do it!

Lol those gen sets might only get started every now and then.
If my truck only got started once a quarter I would probably check the oil before starting too. Plus, let's face it.... Cat is not Toyota. Toyota could buy Cat four times and have enough left over to buy Ditchwitch!

I do understand habits are hard to break though. Keep going, you will be sleeping until 7am soon!

I check once a week too. As a matter of fact, right before my wife and I venture out for grocery shopping on Saturday morning.

Before I bought my quick-lift for the hood of my truck, my wife asked me, "How often do you open the hood?" As if to imply, "why do you need that thingy for the hood?"

I told her "to check the oil, honey." She gave me a look and said, "Oh" and I went about my day.

Lol I don’t get up at 4 Dave and I’m not being a dick. I’m being honest. Check it before a road trip. Check it before and after a day of off roading. If you have someone else change your oil I would check after they are done. Check it each time you fill up the tank. It’s your truck Dave. Check it whenever the hell you feel like it.

hiPSI I worked on gen sets running everything from asphalt plants, crushing operations as well as lots of mining and other construction applications that get shut down nightly…… Help me understand the Toyota could buy Cat thing? I never worked on a V 12 Toyota gen set. Toyota gen sets would fit in the back of your 5’ bed…… I’d use a factory bed mat so they didn’t slide around….just sayin

I think you can safely assume that however often people are telling you to check your oil is how often they’re doing it. With the exception of any raging hypocrites of course.

    I do it twice.
At every 5k miles oil is drained, measured and put into container for recycling. Six new oil qts go into motor, dipstick is checked to verify there is oil showing on dipstick.

No further oil level checks are performed, only the ground at random parking areas, to make sure there are no visible oil leaks. Additionally, I’m always smelling the air around for strange burning smells, and listening for strange weird noises with the radio usually turned off while driving.

Guys I’m certainly aware that Toyota is worth more than CAT…….. I just don’t understand what it has to do with this…..

Nothing at all, just that Cat has much bigger engines and TOYOTA has a much bigger pocket book. But I digress...

    Cheers!
