I haven't used any oil that I can tell, but none of my other vehicles get sooty like this. Check it outIMG_20230421_163719.jpg

Have you been running 92 octane fuel, or higher? My 2020 3.5 will appear the same if I run premium gasoline. I've noticed less power too.

I always use 87, unless it's a place that only has 86 instead, and then use 88

I've use 89 a couple times and saw no difference from 87 All our fuel grades here are E10. I always try to run a top tier brand fuel...mostly Shell,or Irving.

Yeah went 70k on a 2018 f150 coyote, and it was barely discolored

It's possible it's bad gas, but I don't think it happened suddenly, and seemed to come back on the outside when I wiped it. I definitely keep away from shoddy looking pumps

Now that you guys mention it, my wife’s Volvo tailpipes are as black as they could be. And she runs 93.

Tacoma sooty pipe is normal. Same here with no oil consumption.

City driving, shorter trips and cold weather will do that.

It's not normal on the fuel here. All our vehicles here whether a tacoma or something else in good running condition have clean exhaust tips, no sooty black. The tip on my tacoma is an orange/brown type color as long as a use 87 grade fuels. It will turn black if I start using 92, or higher. You will notice the truck run lazier with more transmission gear hunting. Maybe the ethanol in the fuel has something to do with it, idk.

It would have to be very short trips before the engine is fully warmed up. I have seen it happen.

Texas, we run 10% ethanol. Most of my trips are from 5 to 10 miles, city driving.

Tailpipe is sooty. Our engines flip from DI to normal injector operation to clean the intake valves.

The Car Care Nut has a good explanation of the system:

I has more to do with DI cleaning cycles.
This topic came up a few times in early model days and affects stoke and tuned.
IIRC, stoke 87 produces knock correction learning value between 14-19, tunes pushing it to 20-25, some push close to 30. Theoretically, tunes burn the fuel better, but still have a sooty pipe. I monitor engine parameters and know they are within specs.

I bet the longer the tailpipe is, the cooler the temps, and possibly the more likely to deposit carbon. Since the Tacoma has a pretty long exhaust, this may occur.

That’s just a guess, maybe someone can school me.

It's called carbon dust. Car exhaust contains carbon monoxide, and when it mixes with hot water from combustion, it can cake the sides of the exhaust pipe. Some vehicles may show less while others may show more. This could be attributed to ambient conditions or driving style.

When I drive my truck hard, it gets like that. Probably due to DI.

This thread made me go out and look at my tailpipe. Black and sooty like the OP's. All good here!
