You would get a no-start condition way before causing any internal damage. Kinda like the old potato in the tail pipe gag.

Check what the California emissions warranty on the truck is. Its generally much longer than the regular vehicle warranty but an 06 is likely too old, couldn't hurt to check tho.

I got the same problem. But I bolts out cats, soak in soap & water over night. Came out lots of white powder(clog ash). So the cat was insuf. from clogging. I also change out o2. 22K so far no problem

Depends on where you go. I passed cali emissions with no cats and a bunch of missing evap stuff once, but I went to the shady mechanics where nobody spoke english. It cost me $100, but I don't know if that was because I was a white dude or what.

I doubt emissions techs know how every single oem catalytic converter looks like some there are so many different make/model cars out there.

I would just get a cheap generic high flow cat.

Rims and tires , exhaust , stereo , Bhlm ,Changed carpet to black from grey. toytec ultimate lift kit. Allpro front bumper and light bar. In process of blacking out interior. Otrattw switches, black vinyl armrest mod, clazzio leather seat covers with heaters, flowmaster dual exhaust, hornblasters train horns,
When does the truck go for inspection? All the techs need to see is a shiny new cat on a 8year old truck and the red flags start flying. Can't find anything in the junkyard?

Hard to tell if a shiny new Cat will result in increased scrutiny during a smog inspection. They do check to verify that a Cat is installed, but I have never seen them give it more than a passing check. Though running a non-CARB approved Cat is always a risk. I once failed a smog test when the tech could not connect the equipment to the gas tank to verify that the tank did not have a vacuum leak, which sent me to a State Referee station. They give the car a much more detailed inspection, and they normally have lifts if needed. Oh, and the idiot tech should have read the state testing guidelines before failing my car, turns out my older BMW was exempt from the gas tank test as the equipment could not be connected to the gas tank filler.

Generally the smog test stations want to get you in and out as fast as possible and will do the minimum required to meet the state testing guidelines. So if they see a Cat, they just move on to the next item on the visual inspection.

CA is very different, that will not work you must have CARB engraved components AND those components must be registered or listed on the CARB website. As of today there are zero aftermarket cats listed for a 2nd gen Tacoma and that includes any universal cats...none are approved. OE " manifolds " for $1,000 each are the only option in CA. When the tech does the inspection they do a thorough visual inspection of all emission components and reference the CARB site.

Magnaflow has a very nice header/cat and even y pipe for the 4 cylinder that is CARB certified but there is nothing for the 6 cyl. I called Magnaflow and they stated that they were not pursuing having the 6 cyl version CARB certified :/

Magnaflow I believe has the header/cat for 1st gen Tacoma only not for 2nd gen
