I see a few posts with 25+ mpg trip mpg's posts.
Those are BS posts. Tank posts mpg's are what matters. I can knock off 23-24 mpg. For 10 miles down hill. Show me a V6 4X4 tank post real world driving of over 23-24 mpg spread over more than 1 week.

This was spread over 2 weeks. Actual MPG for this tank was 29.26 (469 miles / 16.029 gallons)

Hmm with manual, stock tires, and about 450# of mods and gear I get 22-24mpg. Of course you gotta drive like a granny between 60-70mph and not winding up the engine too much when rowing through gears.

Well, guess I'll eat crow on that one. Great job with the mileage! Doubt many Tacoma owners have ever said I get 29 mpg.
Think I need to edit my post to specified the truck I had in mind V6 4X4.

I took mine on it's first long interstate ride and was pleasantly surprised with the mileage. I ran it at 80 - 85 mph and the mileage seemed to go up compared to driving 65 - 75 mph.... ('22 ORDC 2WD).

I saw a low mpg number on mine yesterday when I started it and back out of the drive and turned it off after idling for a couple minutes.
Its a computer thing doing math,... miles drove vs engine run time vs whatever formula they programmed.

I see 30 mpg sometimes,.... and I know that is not correct either!

Newbie here - I don't even own the Taco yet. Just doing some background reading so I can become familiar with the vehicle. I promise to read the owner's manual. :duel:
Is the fuel economy estimate based on the trip odometer total? In other words, is it important to reset one's trip odometer when looking at either the AVG or instantaneous estimate?
This was an important thing to do in my Subaru - reset the trip odometer after filling (and also calculate REAL economy using the miles driven/gallons pumped method).
The other thing I'd like to ask, for the people with the V6 4x4 complaining of poor mileage: when people are driving on the road and don't need 4WD, they are using the 2WD transmission setting right?

You should take out the "2.7 or not" if you specify V6 and 4x4 in the first half of the sentence.

I sincerely don't think it would be a challenge for the V6 to rival or even get better MPG than the I4 (2GR-FXS is a technological marvel), but 4x4 is the real enemy of fuel efficiency. Before I got my 2020, I had a 2000 4x4 regular cab manual 2.7L (which was at least 600 lbs lighter) that I could not for the life of me get better than 23.7 MPG and I drove it the same as my 2020.

The tank average meter (as seen on my previous post) resets anytime you add more than about 1 gallon of fuel to the tank (even if you don't fill up, it still resets, just need to add enough for the computer to notice to reset it). Resetting the trip odometer is not needed for that function. I reset my trip odometer because I like to see the correlation between how far I've driven since fillup and the readout on the fuel gauge. Also, resetting the trip odometer won't reset any of the AVG MPG calculations that I'm aware of.

Subarus have a center differential, so they can (and must) operate in 4WD all the time without any issues. Tacomas do not have a center differential, so they can't be driven in 4WD on high traction surfaces without putting intense strain the transfer case. Most people who try to drive in 4WD drive when not needed learn really quickly that it's best to not do that, and to leave it in 2WD on high traction surfaces.

Do we have any real data besides an anecdote that you drove for 3 weeks and got “x” mpgs?

These trucks love flat ground and low elevation.

You can tell by the factory transmission programming that Toyota didn't consider anyone would drive in any other conditions.

    This.

High Point is the only city in North Carolina that exists within four counties: Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford and Randolph.[12] It also stands within two major watersheds: the YadkinPee Dee to the west and the Cape Fear to the east. Parts of the city rise above 1,000 feet (300 m), making it among the highest cities in North Carolina's Piedmont.

    And this.

    Geology[edit]
The surface relief of the Piedmont is characterized by relatively low, rolling hills with heights above sea level between 200 feet (50 m) and 800 feet to 1,000 feet (250 m to 300 m). Its geology is complex, with numerous rock formations of different materials and ages intermingled with one another. Essentially, the Piedmont is the remnant of several ancient mountain chains that have since been eroded.

    And the 3 week drive.
    Was this.

Weekday 22 miles round trip per day to work and back.
    • 1.5 miles 45 mph city. 1 stop sign and 3 stop lights. Then about 8.5 miles hwy. 65 mph. Then about 1 mile 35 mph city. 1 stop sign and 2 stop lights. 11 miles total. 2.5 city 8.5 hwy. 29% city 71% hwy.
    • Reverse of that coming home. Same 29%-71% split.

Weekends are all city. 35-45 mph zones. That 70 miles spread over 3 weekends averaging 23 miles/weekend is 100% city.
Yes the the 70 weekend miles out of 400 is only 17%. But add in 5 miles per weekday of city 75+70=145. 145/400 = 36% city.
So the 40% I quoted has an error of 4 percentage points.

When I look at my tank averages it's not a 300-400 mile daily trip with 2-3 starts/stops. With a stoplight or 3.
Its over 3 weeks with the mileage being 64% hwy. 36 city. The trucks operating conditions over that 3 weeks have to be considered.
    • 55-60 engine starts and stops. 21 of them being morning cold starts.
    • 40 give or take 2 or 3 stop signs
    • And at least 130-140 stoplights.
True the mileage may be a 64-36 split. But the trucks operation time is a probably 50/50 hwy/city.

That’s probably the easiest driving I have ever seen. No wonder you get the advertised mpg
