yes, what all the others said is true. It sounds like you were probably getting more like 21-22 MPG.

Don't feel bad, my coworker drives a Tundra and informed me that he got 26 MPG on the highway. Come to find out he learned funny math too.

Here's a simply way that I calculate my mpg:

I fill-up every time, and let the pump stop itself. (Don't keep pumping to even out the dollar amount)

Divide the miles from the last fill-up by the gallons that you just put in your tank.

Reset my trip OD while at gas station. (These miles will be used for calculation at next fill-up)

I'm sure that it's not 100% accurate, but damn close. This way you don't have to keep track of what what the OD was, subtract, and then divide ect.

yup, or keep the reciept, tells you how many gallons you put in. Write down or remember the miles on your trip od before you reset it again.....

then go punch the numbers into fuel frog....... calculates it for you so u no need to do funny math.........bamzo.......... your doing better than 18mpg for sure.....

You are getting some good advice. Wait.

Americans are finally waking up and realizing the rest of the world is using diesel. Although Toyota and Ford both have excellent turbo 4 cyl diesels used in vehicles outside of NA, neither company is particularly progressive so look to VW and Honda. You may find a high performance diesel truck through Honda later this year. Or, a VW diesel in a Dodge/Jeep -- note that Jeep is currently building diesel vehicles in the US and shipping them to Europe and elsewhere. For example, the Patriot can be had with a six speed MT and turbo VW engine (+40 MPG). Wait. Diesel is a far simpler solution than hybrid.

I do that too, but I always do my calcs on the gas receipt. That way I have other info on it, date, price, grade, location, etc...

Got 13 and 14 TRUE mpg with my 06 f150. Calculated every tank and ran gps at all times to track exact mileage. I've heard of dealerships that actually have people believing they can reprogram they're f150's to get 6 miles more per gallon via a "reprogram"! Pretty sure they are just changing the tire size option to make the odometer look alot "better" (which probably throws mph off also?). I have a buddy that claims 20mpg with his F150 after a dealership "reprogram".

My 09 tacoma is averaging just over 18 around town and hovered just above 21 on an all toll road trip. Haven't compared the odometer with the gps yet, but do know that the displayed speedometer speed is 2 or 3mph more than what you are really going at 60 to 70mph, which affects true mileage a bit.

NO MODS YET! 20" Enkeis with NT420 performance tires coming soon...inspired by genxer36.
oops! you're correct. tank capacity is a greater number than the fill up number since the gas pump stops when the tank is nearly full. ok so I will have more accurate numbers for you after my third tank. sorry.
And I won't use cruise control on the hills.

I thought this was true for GM vehicles not toyota.

Thanks all again for your help!!! Really I mean it!!! As a first-time toyota owner i find this forum very helpful.;)
a turn off from buying a hybrid is that there are no incentives. ugh! And when I trade in the tacoma i'll lose money. however it probably won't take long to make up the loss as the hybrid escape does 10 mpg better.
I want to keep the truck but if mpg is showing only 1 mpg improvement from my full-sized pickup then it wasn't worth moving from a full-size. I'd be happy with 21-22. I know the RWD tacoma does 24! and the 4 cylinder tacoma does 26 - 28!

    getting there....
give it time to break in man........your truck way too new to start showing real good mileage savings. put some more miles on it, and maybe even a good afe pro dry s filter, and your mileage will climb......guaranteed.

the light comes on when there are approximately 3 gallons left. so if you continued to drive for 15 miles that means you had between 2 and 2.5 left in the tank. so you put 18 to 19 gallons in. so divide 390 by 18 or 19 to get your average mileage. thats 21.6mpg divided by 18 or 20.5 divided by 19. always look at the pump to see how many gallons you actually put in and then divide by the miles to get the right average

Only driving to school I get 20MPG. Considering thats in town, I'm happy as hell. I also am not so easy on the throttle any more. Just throwing that out there.

    Keep the Taco.

I must say, I am excited to see the F100. I heard there where gonna make it available with a small diesel, which would be awesome!

Did you ever consider that your driving style might be the biggest factor in your mpg? I get shit mpg in my taco. I also get terrible mpg when I drive my ladies prius too. She gets like 49 50 mpg and when I drive its gets 29 30 mpg. And I am usually trying to go easy cuz I am never driving it unless she is with me and she gets all pissy about me screwing up here average. 30 would be comparable to most non hybrids cars. You might get a hybrid and realize you get far less than the advertised mpg. Also with the losses you will take on getting rid of the taco you are going to find yourself out a lot more than you will save on gas. Do the math it shouldnt be too hard to make the right decision once you can see the numbers. good luck whatever you decide.

ok your comparing the gas mileage of a 4x4 to a 2x4 yes they are going to be the same and if you think for one moment your going to get 31 mpg going up and down hills with your pressy hybryd think again. They only runn of the battery only when in town once on the highway you almost never use the electric motor.

I purchased my Tacoma in Aug. it's 08 TRD 6/6spd 4x4. My first two tanks I got 16.5 MPG combo HWY/CITY driving very light footed. Gas was $4.25 in the burbs and $4.75 in the city.
Now gas is $3.30,with 3700 miles I'm not so light footed and doing 70 not 55 on the Hwy. I'm getting 18 MPG combo and could not be happier. Don't be suprised to see gas back down at the mid 2's in the next year.

Acutually the 4x4 gets worse mileage... it's heavier due to extra diff.

Also, if you have a 6 speed manual, you will have worse mileage than the auto 5 speed. The auto in the tacos are pretty awesome...

So I basically got the worse mpg taco configuration there is..... I think sometimes for the amount of gas I'm burnin, I should've got the V8 tundy for the HP.... ya know.... but oh well.... the taco is fun to drive in a stick....

My girl has the regular escape..... don't do it man.... the taco outclasses it by leaps and bounds....

    Hybrids MPG:

34/30 mpg: 2008 Mazda Tribute (AWD)
34/30 mpg: 2008 Ford Escape (AWD)
    34/30 mpg: 2008 Mercury Mariner (4WD)
27/32 mpg: 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line (2WD)
27/25 mpg: 2008 Toyota Highlander (AWD)
    26/24 mpg: 2008 Lexus 400h (AWD)
    21/22 mpg: 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe (2WD)
    20/20 mpg: 2008 GMC Yukon (4WD)

as you can see, the less mpg you get, the more manly the vehicle is.... so I think u doin fine [IMG]

4x4 is slower than the 4x2 but the weight doesn't really affect mileage. alot of weight will but just a few hundred lbs is nothing when mileage is concerned. My 4x4 gets the same mileage as teh 4x2 (at least it did until my air filter got clogged, once i get a new one my mpg will be right back up with the pre runners)
