I own a Prius as my other vehicle. It is a great car. I live in Ohio and travel to South Carolina every so often. I get about 50.5 MPG on the trip to SC with most of that while driving 70-75 MPH. I've had the Prius for over a year and was fortunate enough to qualify for a $750+ tax rebate last year.

The rebate for Hybrids is based upon production levels and sales. Those rebates are eliminated when 60,000 units are produced. It is used to entice manufacturers to produce new fuel efficient models.

Anyway, a Tacoma and Prius make a great combo. No one should be shocked at the Taco's MPG's.

That's a tough one, they are both great vehicles. But my everyday lifestyle and more typical needs are better served by the Taco, so if I had to give one up it'd probably be the Prius. Mind you, if gas goes back to $4 or $5 or more per gallon, as I suspect it will one day in the not-too-distant future, I might reconsider my choice.

Most of you have much better mpg than me!!! I get a consistent 16.5-17 mpg in LA driving conditions (freeway traffic and city streets).
I have about 2300 miles on an 08 DC SB.
I probably would be able to get more mpg by driving like a grandma, but what for? It takes away the fun in it!

The Escape Hybrid sells at $9000 more than a comparably equipped non-hybrid Escape (29K vs 20K) per Ford's website. How much gas do you have to use to make up that difference in price and start saving money?

The standard Escape has an epa estimate of 22/28 whereas the Hybrid has an epa estimate of 34/31. Assuming worse case for the gas model (100% city driving), that means that every gallon in the hybrid will get you 1.5 times the distance of a standard Escape. Let's say you drive 200 miles per week. That's about 9 gallons of gas per week with the standard and 5.9 gallons for the hybrid. So each week you save 3.1 gallons with the hybrid. Let's assume a worse case that gas will go to $5/gallon. That mean's you'll save $15.50 per week (3.1 * $5). $9000/$15.5 = 580 weeks just to break even. 580 weeks is 11.16 years at $5 per gallon.

At $5 per gallon, it's 580 weeks or 11.2 years to break even (116,480 miles).
At $4 per gallon, it's 725 weeks or 14 years to break even (145,600 miles).
At $3 per gallon, it's 967 weeks or 18.6 years to break even (193,440 miles).

If you figure in the $3000 tax break for a hybrid, then the recoup cost is at best $8000 (even though you're getting a $3000 dollar deduction, it's only worth what your tax rate is times the deduction)

So at $5 per gallon it's 516 weeks or 9.9 years to break even (102,960 miles).
At $4 per gallon it's 645 weeks or 12.4 years to break even (128,960 miles).
At $3 per gallon, it's 860 weeks or 16.5 years to break even (171,600 miles).

If it's a full credit (paid after taxes are calculated), then the payoff is $6000 and the results are:

So at $5 per gallon it's 387 weeks or 7.4 years to break even (76,960 miles).
At $4 per gallon it's 483 weeks or 9.2 years to break even (96,600 miles).
At $3 per gallon, it's 645 weeks or 12.4 years to break even (129,032 miles).

You also have to figure in the extra sales tax you'll pay on that extra $9000.
    4% = $360
    5% = $450
    7% = $630
    8% = $720

If you drive mostly highway, you'll probably never reach break even.

They give you a tax credit for buying a new one, not just for owning one (one time credit). The maximum credit is $3000.
