I'm not so sure if I hit the mark on this one. V6 1GRFE I wanted to put 5.5qts but I might have put almost a total of 6qts.. Maybe even 6.2qts. It's been sitting for 2 days now and it came out from the dip stick level as shown. Is it good or bad? Any info would help thanks guys

And btw.. It's just 1inch shy away from the full mark.

I believe it takes 1qt to get from the low mark to the high mark on the stick... looks like your maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a qt over. Did you start truck/turn off and let it sit for a while, remove stick and wait a good 15 minutes before reinserting? Sometimes it will read high if you don't let the oil drain back down the tube that gets dragged up when removing the dip stick. They say 5.5 but mine takes around 5.2 to hit the full mark.

Thats too much. Drain some and recheck. Too much oil in the crank case will cause the oil to foam. Once this happens it doesnt lubricate and cool parts the way it should.

When you filled the oil, did you start the truck to get oil pumped and filled into the filter? If not, you may have the correct amount.

Other than the dipstick, why do you think you added too much?

I started the truck first then checked the oil. And no, I did not start the truck and pumped the oil. I only started the truck once I think I was done adding the oil

Just asking because I can't get a real clear reading off the dipstick on my truck to save the world.

Well, whatever the toyota manual says is what is suppose to be max. Yes, you can go a little over, but yours looks like its quite a bit. Is it worth taking a chance? Its pretty easy to just drain a little. I did this on my last fill. The dip sticks are hard to read on these and I wasnt sure how much I had in there. Once I got it to settle, it was over the max mark by about a 1/4". I drained and rechecked until I got it down to the full mark.

I cut diamond groves from the low to full marks and it helped a little, but I wish Toyota would make a dipstick like I had in my last truck, because it was a lot easier to read.

I've roughed it up petty good but I believe it's the fact it is a good bend in the tube so the oil drags along the stick when you perform a standard dip stick check. Pull it, wipe then pull it again to see the level.

The only real thing I hate about the tacoma is the dip stick set up.

How do you not know how much oil you put in? I mean, you physically took off the caps of the individual quarts or the 5 gallon jug right?

Maybe try pulling the dipstick, wait a while and check, so the oil drains back and not getting dragged up. I agree, my last trucks dipstick was accurate and didn't have this problem.

That's the reason I prefer the quart size, but it's cheaper in the 5 quart jugs. It might be just me, but I'm never sure trying to read the sight window on the jugs and feel I'm not adding the correct amount.

Next time just put 5qts in and drive it for a few days. Re-chack and see where you're at. FWIW,I put 5qts in mine and don't worry about it.
