First I am definitely not trying to push anyone’s buttons. I had a 3rd gen. I’ll leave it at that.

Looking at a 2nd gen. Which years should I stay away from, has the most problems. All vehicles have problems, some worse than others. That’s why I asked.

    Looking at a very clean 2007. 123,000 miles, 4.0, auto, 4x4, 4 door, 6ft bed.

I’m in Hawaii and I think Tacoma’s are the most popular vehicle. I counted 150+ on a 42 mile drive. There’s just about any year available for sale. Most have over 100,000 because many people live way outside of the larger cities. People are driving 40+ miles one way to work.

Anyway, any advice on any particular year of a 2nd gen would be appreciated, good or bad.

2014 or 2015 are really solid choices. Are you looking to get rid of the 3rd to go to a 2nd? or is the 2nd an additional vehicle?

I drive a 2010 witch also has a timing chain versus a belt in the earlier years. When I searched before I bought. from what i read the 2010-2011 has the least amount of “reported” problems

My 2009 has only had the A/C blower issue. Other than that its been a solid runner.

Yes you are correct. Had is the key word. If you want to know why, read my posts in the 3rd gen section or ask me. Do you have anything to contribute to my question about the 2nd gens?

    I'm running a 2009 4 cylinder single cab, 5 lug and it's awesomeness.
I do like the 808 style.

I know the 05 and a few years after it (maybe) had the rust issue and the head gasket failure issue. Someone can give details on the years.

From what I understand, 2010-2015 are all solid choices. 2.5 gen started at 2012.

I had a 3rd gen for about 6 months. Hated it. Went back to a trusty 1st gen that just keeps going and going. I’ve had 7 Toyota trucks over the years from the old hilux to a 2017. Now looking for a 2nd truck, 2nd gen just for something newer. The 1st gens are pretty basic and it’s my off road toy. A 2nd trunk is just something I want, not necessarily need and would be for non off-road driving, hauling stuff, and light off-roading.

Thank you. This is what I’m looking for. 2012 on has been updated a bit. Toyotas usually just go and go. I have t kept up through the years. I bought a 96 new then later an 06 4Runner. I’m trying to get an idea of what major changes, good or bad have happened over the years to the 2nd gens.

From what I understand, the head gasket issue was remedied in the later half of the 06 model. And that is just the V6, the 4 cylinder didn't have that issue.
I believe the air pump is like an old school smog pump. It injects air into the exhaust to help burn any unburned fuel.

I'd avoid 2005 due to the head gasket issue.

I have a 2010 and it's been solid, no issues. The only thing that hurts these trucks is rust.

oh cmon no need for all that. It’s a forum it’s meant to ask and discuss topics regarding our trucks.

And so are forums like this. Besides, what would we do all day if we didn’t try to help out someone. I think Google has slowed my connection, I’m using it so much lately.

I think that’s stopped earlier on, too. 2010 and on I know for sure shouldn’t have the same rusted frame issue as the ones suffering from it.
