It looks to be a BHG. Hairline cracks between each cylinder. Still need to check for flatness, but just slapping a headgasket in seems like the way to go at the moment!

There are hairline cracks between all the cylinders, so it's looking like it's a head gasket!

Trying to decide what I'm going to do for gaskets. I think I'm going to go with an OEM head gasket, the Toyota gasket is MLS, so there's no real sense in upgrading that.

Also.. would it be worth tossing a new chain on??? The Toyota chain and guides are relatively expensive, I don't know much about chains and guides, so I'm going to take them over to dads later today for an expert opinion on the wear, and I'll measure the chain and check for stretch (I don't own calipers) and see what he says about them.

If you're planning on running the engine for a long while new guides at a bare minimum. I typically replace all timing gear at once if it has over 200k on it. No sense in risking it after putting all the effort into tearing it down and rebuilding it.

I checked the wear on the guides, they're at 1.8mm, and spec for replacement is 2mm, so I'm going to order a timing set for it.

I'm not going to bother doing all Toyota stuff, I've decided. The next time this engine dies, it's getting a +4 cylinder mod (or maybe before), I don't have the time or funds to make starting that project justifiable. Plus, I need two sheets of drywall to finish the basement walls and I'm gonna have to bug dad to take me to Home Depot, just like my pre driving days lol.

Had the head into Nova today, buddy said there was a .005" twist, so they skimmed it for me.

Also, the truck as 326k on it, and roughly 150 of those were turning 33's the poor little 4 banger did not have an easy life.

I bought it with 126 on it, so over the last 6 years I've put 200k on it! The majority of those were before I bought the house.

I’ve put on 70k miles (110k-ish kms) in 10 years. Haha
And that includes a couple trips to and from Alberta and BC

By the sounds of it you'll need to start using stabilizer every fill up!

I haven't touched the truck the last little bit, been waiting on parts! Head bolts should be here tomorrow, and then I'll start picking away at reassembly.

I've been working on the basement the last week or so, one thing led to another and there isn't ant tile down there anymore.

To get the mastic up I had to rent a polisher and a mastic remover............................................................................................

Let me tell you, that thing had some bite, and boy oh boy I am going to be cleaning dust out of everything I own for years.
