I would be very interesting if he would have done some smaller stuff to start with, like the stuff that we commonly use :) something like a M8 Grade 8 nut / bolt combo VS M8 Grade 10 and just how much stronger it is before it strips.

Me not being an engineer, I tend to over compensate when its not necessary just for "piece of mind" but if I was to buy the thing i'm making then I would trust the manufacture to include the proper strength fasteners.
Case and point is my skid plates i'm working on, 4 out of the 6 bolts are original Totota bolts, and the last two I had to buy, so what did I do? buy the Grade 10.8 bolts because I don't know any better, and think that I needed strong stuff. ( but do I?.. ) I have no idea what grade the toyota bolts are, but I trust they are up to the job for no other reason then that's what was holding on the original skid plate.

anyway. off to work. I've got some hand sanitizer dispensers to hang....

    Keep the shiny side up

Also not an engineer but I hope you're using grade 8 bolts on those hand sanitizers :p

Meat Cove. It's the most northerly point on Cape Breton, so you get to do the Cabot Trail on the way there. You can camp on that little spit of rock if you reserve the honeymoon suite.

Also not an engineer, but generally speaking........

The "stronger" the bolt the more brittle it is.

A grade 10.9 would have a higher tensile strength compared to a grade 8.8, but it would have less stretch, and depending on the situation that could be a good or bad thing. There's also a grade 12.9!

When it comes to your skid, most forces would be compressive (the skid impacting the frame) with a little shear (the skid sliding on the frame, contacting the bolt). I would say anything of reasonable size would be fine in that situation, regardless of grade. Especially considering it's not do-or-die, if you break a bolt on your skid, there's a good chance you'll still be able to made it home, where as if you broke a shackle bolt, you'd be pooched.

I would say most Toyota non-critical fasteners are grade 8.8, seems to be the "general purpose" fastener in the metric system.

    Fun fact;
Ironworkers generally use a low grade thicc bolt when fastening beams/buildings together, they have stretch, and in that situation that's beneficial, rather than having a catastrophic failure.

    Fun fact 2;
"lock washers" aka split washers were invented for ironworkers so they could tighten up the fasteners from one side, and can actually reduce the torque required to loosen a fastener.

Not at all, those were spares and I'm half communist so they weren't mine anyway

I am thinking ahead to the day I have the chance to change out my rear flex lines for longer ones. I have a set of extended length stainless ones, but I'd prefer some made up that I can pinch off during repairs.

I just took old brake lines, cut the fittings off the ends and welded them shut a the line end so that I now have brake line caps. They work pretty well if you don't have the banjo style brake lines.

Did a tire rotation on the weekend and noticed my new(ish) UCA BJ's have a bit old split in the boots, both sides!!

these are Freedom Offroad UCA's with their proprietary 7 herb and spices brand of BJ's. From my research no one sells ( or has found ) a sutable replacement BJ, so I'm stuck with buying them directly from Freedom.
$35 USD for each one plus $50 shipping.. all in USD..

I knew this buying them, but figured the dang BJ's would last more then a year with less then 10,000km on them. Its not like I even wheeled it hard or anything either. Just fire road crap!
bit salty, a-lot disappointed... For now I just plumped them full of grease to seal the hole. They still feel tight so I have time to figure out my options.

to buy the Freedom OR BJ's.... or switch camps.

    I'm open to suggestions.

I see Rock Auto has some interesting MevoTech UCA's that look a whole lot like 1st gen SPC UCA's....

We need to all grab coffee or go for a run or something.

@Tertius420 You paint them sliders yet?

@D2. for whatever reason I didn't get the notification that you tagged me... I have not gotten them powder coated yet, was going to do it soon ish but money has been tight so can't do it just yet. I have so much work to do on the truck! I just need to buy these R4T - Bumper Caps - Toyota Tacoma (2016-2021) (runnin4tacos.com) cuz I don't want to cut my front end and then I'll be ready to do the bumper/winch and hopefully the sliders can go on the same weekend. I've been out every weekend the last two or three weekends and planning to go out again this weekend, might even go into the trails off of the Ellershouse exit if I can justify spending the money on the gas ;) Went down to the Lunsden dam last weekend, cool area! and then on Sunday we did a trip out to Alma lake which is off of the #10 and that was pretty sweet too! Found a couple of really nice camping spots right on the lake! Have you or anyone else on here been out doing much lately? I noticed it's been pretty dead on here!

I feel your pain, I'm re-freshing the cooling system on my truck, Water pump, gaskets, bypass pipe, rad cap, and it feels like death by a 1000 cuts! Still gathering parts, but we're getting close to having all I need for the re-fresh.

as for camping, no. Just the occasional trip to bow water. no camping. Been kind of stuck in a rut to be honest, between kids, and house maintenance don't really leave the house on the weekends.

Skid plate is getting painted, once that's done I'll feel a whole lot better about trails.

Yeah I'm still trying to find somewhere to get a good set of skids, with skids and the front bumper/winch I have I'd feel a lot better in my solo runs out into the woods. I'm off all next week so planning to get out a lot but who knows if I'll even be able to afford to spend the money on gas <SIGH> Really behind on editing, I have like 2-3 years of footage I need to edit and post online! We should maybe try to organize another run with a bunch of folks sometime soon, maybe a run into the Bowater trails? or somewhere up near the city to encourage more folks to show up? Just a thought.

Ever feel like your just spinning your wheels?

My in cabin fan switch has only worked on "Hi" for a month now. No biggie, this happened before, its most likely the blower motor resistor right? I replaced it before , but that was 4 years ago and aftermarket parts don't always last.... so I bought another one.
yesterday decided to finally install the new one. I already did the whole connector swap, and the connector looked perfect ( no burn marks ), I pulled out the resistor thingy, and the connectors on it looked perfect. The resistor part itself looked a little "dirty" but whatever, I had a new one. So I connected the new one, did a real quick test with the resistor not fully installed, and volia, it worked, I had low --> hi. Cool.

button everything back up aaaannnndddd nothing. Not even high :frusty:
    I just gave up.
some days it feels like you can't even get the simple stuff to go right ya know?

I'm going to do some actual diagnosis with a multimeter this weekend so i'll let everyone know what's up. I just wanted to rant

catch you on the flip side

PS: anyone seen my 12pt 14mm socket.... I swear I just had it.... ;)

I don’t know what the issue is now, but check the fuses. May have popped something when putting it back together. Might be a pinched wire

As far as the resistors go, I managed to salvage the one from my old car a couple times simply by resoldering the points on the board.
