You read that wrong. That was a generalization of the state of our society overall and of our elected 'leadership' in this country. Also meant as a statement about the tone of this thread wherein the bulk of posts are merely giving foot-stamping opinion rather than actual disucussion of whether or not this law is reasonable.

In that case...yes, I agree the leadership of the country has plenty of issues with compromise.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
California, anytime I see something like this I am 90% sure it's a new 'Fornia law going into effect! This is pretty ridiculous, I didn't read the article, but I don't see how they are gonna enforce this, about as easy as trying to make stoners quit smoking weed in their basements...

It's not surprising to me that a law like this has come to be. I've been smoking for 10 years and have always made a point not to smoke around people who don't smoke. I'm either alone in my car or out back on the patio of my own house.

I just quit smoking about 3 months ago and don't miss it a single bit. I didn't realize how bad those things smelled until I quit. I'm currently using an e-cigarrette to help me on my journey of being nicotine free, and am waiting for laws to come out that stop me from using it in public places, and when it happens I won't be surprised.

I'm glad to see someone doing something about an issue as serious as this one.

I would support a law that would mandate this. I would also make it so that business that wanted to be both have both areas separated by a physical barrier and 2 separate HVAC zones, rather than 2 sections of the building but no real division so that all non-smokers had to deal with the smoke that made its way to the non-smoke section.

If you reread my post I said "walking into the store". as in the front of the stores... Target, wal mart, the mall...pretty much Every store in town people will hang out in front of it and smoke before they go in...

    same with many/most restaurants,

if I owned the establishment...there would be no smoking "on the premisis" to give my customers a real smoke free experience. and not have to walk the "smokers gauntlet" when entering or leaving the place. It also would virtually elininate cig butts from the parking lot (don't even get me started on smokers and their butts )

however...if the guy down the street wants to open a place that allows smoking both inside & outside his business, he should have the right to do so in a free capitalist society.

    then...let the market decide.

I think was said right here, they don't care what you do inside you-re home, but this is where thinks gets complicated, if you live inside somebody's else's apartment, it isn't you-re home. And that somebody has the right to regulate what happens in HIS home.

I'm fine with all of that. I am getting sick and tired of fiddling with my thermostat anyway. At least my wife won't be able to crank it up whenever she feels like it.

All laws infringe on someone's rights. In general, I have no problem with laws that infringe on the rights of adults when they're intended to protect children. I know this is a razor-sharp line to walk between telling people how to raise their kids, but I think having a caveat that says "If you, as a business owner, wish to allow smoking in your 'open to the public' establishment, then you are not allowed to admit minors" or something along those lines is reasonable.

When it comes to the original point of this thread, I do see it as reasonable to say that a landlord can rent his building to smokers, but not if they're bringing children along. As a society, we've recognized that smoking is a particularly bad item that should be given special treatment when it comes to how far we'll go on infringing on the rights of those involved. It's the 'outright ban' nature of this particular law that I have issues with.
