I'm betting its safety regs. Somebody is convinced that the monstrous looming wall that has become our grille results in fewer fatalities, or so I heard. And if you raise the front end, the entire belt-line has to be hitched up to match.

...I mean, sure, you might not be able to see pedestrians anymore, but at least you won't kill them!

I’m not a mechanical expert but why do diesel trucks in semis all have turbos if the life expectancy is half? I’d think that would be something they’d want durability. I see tons out there with 800k -1.8m miles on diesels. Maybe the tech is different. Someone here knows more.

I'm not going to make the claim that a turbo has lower lifespan, but...

A 4cyl turbo and a tractor turbo are two different animals completely. One, they are built to different scales (its more difficult to maintain a turbo that's been shoehorned into a transverse inline 4) :cookiemonster:. Two, you are talking different duty cycles, different rpms, and different loads. A million miles on a truck is nothing when its churning out a near constant speed for 500+ miles at a time.

That said, certain engine wear items, particularly the items that start to go after 100k miles and beyond, become a colossal pain in the ass when there is a big honking turbo to shuffle out of the way. Any engine issue that would have been an easy fix before is now a little more complicated to diagnose. And if you arent DIYing, more expensive. Hence, the perception that turbo'd cars break more frequently.

i know is a joke. but for real they can keep the same engine and just update the transmission with an 8speed/10speed. that does not looks for gears. an people will be happy

15 Liters and 500 hp is your answer.... 30hp per liter is what gets you the long ass life. In a pedestrian application... and 100+ per liter gets you low ass life expectancy.

IDK where you get you information from, but in RL I’ve seen many more turbo failures on HD diesel engines than I care to. The engine, not so much.

They’ve (turbos) become much better over the years, but turbos are still very expensive to R/R for the average consumer. In commercial application a down vehicle costs are high in revenue lost. In consumer application, a vehicle down it’s just a dreadful expense.

Imagine a failure when the warranty is expired or denied due to maintenance or abuse.

Have you heard about the new Turbo issues with the new Tundra turbo debut? Google is your friend.

That’s why I said I’m no expert and someone here knows more. I don’t work in the commercial diesel world or know about so I was asking.

I’ve worked in the automotive industry for over 40yrs in most all phases of it, including consumer automotive, fleet management of both light and heavy equipment, except sales and manufacturing.
Moreover, my brother in-law currently owns a HD commercial repair and maintenance shop for over the road semis, as well as semis to haul goods, so I’m a little more familiar and sensitive about issues and costs than the average consumer maybe.

I got a 2022 with a v6 and MT just in case Toyota decided to FUBAR the new models. Not my problem now if they do.

This news has been leaked for a year…OVtune was talking about this last year. They did it to the Tundra…makes sense they would do it to the Tacoma

Not sure this is really that breaking of news, it’s definitely what makes sense. I’m guessing the 6th Gen 4runner uses a similar powertrain (assuming they ever release the thing lol).

Honestly, I think most MPG gains will be from an updated transmission, not the turbo 4-cylinder. My wife and I have been looking for a Highlander, and they switched from the 3.5 V6 to the 2.4 Turbo 4 in ‘23. It lost a bit of HP but gained a good chunk of torque. MPG was pretty much unchanged, maybe went up 1 MPG combined? Lots of people saying it actually gets less in the city with a heavy foot.

I’m guessing the hybrid will be for top trim models like the Pro and maybe Limited for increased power numbers, not fuel mileage, a la the Tundra and Sequoia.

So you’re the opinion I was after thank you. I am in shipping as a profession and do a bunch of loading trailers but most drivers aren’t too chatty about their rigs beyond crying about pay. But that’s common in every work field.

It will be a great truck. Like always. And easy to tune to get 350 hp most likely

Yes, everyone worries about the pay. But it's not the pay that's the real issue, the hard part is holding on to it, and that's where they miss it lol!

In commercial applications turbos are just about necessary. You just can’t beat the bang for the buck.
Moreover, a commercial vehicle is an asset that brings in revenue, so when it’s down, repair is not a “I’ll think about it” option, whereby a consumer vehicle is a combination of luxury, expense and liability to get where you want to go.

Also diesel and gas are two different animals.

For most consumers, cheaper is better and that’s why they sell. And I think some automakers seem to have forgotten lessons learned by Henry Ford and others during the great depression.
