I have handle some fowl language no worries. And yes you are correct, more people need to be able to stick up for them selves. I for one am like you, I have zero issue standing up for myself, and I'll stand up for others in a heartbeat.

Bullying is just a small part of the bigger picture, it still shouldn't be encouraged for the new generation.

As far as telling the gay kids to grow the f*ck up? I'll say the same to you I said to Cob. Would you say the same if your son were gay?

I thought you would get the " Kids in the Hall " reference being Canadian , but you're probably too young .

Yes. I would tell him that he should stand up for himself. Same thing my dad told me, once I followed his advice I was no bullied anymore. I don't mean you have to go around beating up everyone, just that you HAVE to stand up for yourself to survive in this world. Or if you can't stand up for your self then find a good friend that can help you out (I've been this friend many times before and still would today with out second thought).

I'd agree with that poster if my son were gay.

Here's my point: Homosexuals are far more accepted than they ever have been in this country in the past, and yet the suicide rate has simply not gone down.

That makes it pretty clear to me that there is something disordered about homosexuality that causes homosexuals to be depressed and likely to commit suicide. I simply can't believe it is bullying that can cause that on such a large scale: plenty of groups and people are bullied or persecuted without resorting to suicide.

That doesn't mean I hate homosexuals at all. Would I still love him if I had a gay son? Absolutely!

Now, do I advocate bullying of homosexuals? Of course not! I agree that nobody should be bullied because of who they are.

I'm just saying that the problem can clearly not be bullying. If bullying caused wide-scale suicide (not counting specific cases where an individual that is troubled is bullied), there would be a lot of groups that would be extinct right now.

I also object to the way the video equates having a problem with homosexuals marriage to having a problem with homosexual people. They aren't the same thing.

Once again: Bullying is just a small part of the larger puzzle. I have full faith that with or without bullying, some people would still feel alienated enough to take their own lives.

Refer to it as bullying, alienation, whatever. My point is that acceptance has increased considerably, with no effect on suicide rates. That to me points to acceptance not being a major part of the problem.

What proof do you have that suicide rates have not decreased or increased?

Not discrediting you I just haven't looked into it.

Are you suggesting gay people are inherently depressed or ashamed of themselves ?

I'm saying that the data appears to show that gay people are inherently prone to depression and suicide, yes.

Why exactly? No clue. But focusing on acceptance seems rather fruitless if the trend toward acceptance the last few decades hasn't significantly affected the suicide rate.

BrokenTusk, I can't find the data right now unfortunately, as I have to actually do work at work. If I remember, I'll poke around tonight.

And just to be clear, I'm not taking some anti-acceptance stance here. I think we should certainly accept homosexual people. I also think think bullying homosexuals is certainly wrong, although I don't see why the video can't focus on bullying people in general or why proposition 8 has anything to do with any of it.

What I am disagreeing with is the way, as I saw it, the video:

    1) Equates supporting prop 8 with hating gay people. I think you can certainly be against gay marriage and accepting of gay people at the same time.

    2) Blames the suicide rate on "bullying". If I ever get around to pulling them up so I'm not quoting air, the stats seem to speak for themselves.
But even without statistics, the fact that this video is discussing suicide among homosexuals certainly speaks to the notion that it is still a problem, despite vastly more acceptance than that group used to have 40 years ago.

I don't have a problem with your position , I felt this discussion was lowering my IQ , and frankly , after the drug use in my teens , I can't spare anymore .
