Maybe if California didn't tax and regulate the shit out of everyone, more businesses would want to stay.

But you are pronouncing California wrong.

It's COWLEEFOUNIA, as pronounced by our Govenornator. ;)

Too bad. I grew up just north of there. When Chevrolet and Toyota first teamed up, they couldn't think of a name for the joint company. They tried various combination, etc. The one they should have stuck with was Toyolet. [IMG]

The truck plant in San Antonio is barely running, and there is a brand new factory in Mississippi meant for Prius' that is empty. I hear the workers there are spucing up the neighborhood at last check.

Shutting the NUMMI plant will impact Fremont badly. There's around 4,500 people working there now. There's also a lot of restaurants and stores near the plant. That means not only will the area lose the auto worker jobs, but probably jobs in the supporting businesses around it. Add that to the more than 10% unemployment in the Bay Area and its not a good thing.

We have a plant that supplies parts to NUMMI & Baja so I'm not sure what that means for our plant at this point. We have many Tier 2 suppliers in that area that will likely be gravely effected.

Well, it seems like most manufacturing is heading towards the South ( cheaper labor, less taxes, cheaper land) Plus VW is building a new plant in AL. There was talk in the article about possibly expanding manufacturing in the Mississippi plant, which makes a lot of sense to me. If you're in a Southern state, I'd probably not worry as much as someone in a state like MI, CA, or up in Canada. Hopefully you guys won't be as affected or affected at all. Good luck.

The sad part about this is people trying to tie it into politics...as though the executive office is in charge of the economy or something.

Where our government has failed is regulation, which is the fault of both parties and all offices. Trying to pin the current economic woes on Obama is just as stupid as trying to pin the post-911 economic woes on Bush II.

If your VIN number starts with a 3, it's from Mexico. If it starts with a 5, it's from NUMMI.

Nothing to do with politics. This is strictly economic and tied to the recession and the fact that consumers aren't buying any cars. That and GM pulled out of the plant. Additionally, California is about the most expensive state to manufacture anything, and on top of that, the plant is in the Bay Area, which is the most expensive metro area in the US. So there were probably many factors involved with the decision, but tied almost exclusively to money.

My hope is that Toyota will make it easier for the employees of the plant. I know a few years ago Nissan USA moved headquarters from So Cal to Tennessee and offered attractive deals to get employees to move there. Perhaps Toyota will offer a similar incentive. But in any regard, good luck to all of the people who worked at NUMMI. You made excellent products. I drive one now. Its been the best damned vehicle I've ever owned.

I maybe wrong, but I would bet that the NUMMI plant will stay open as long as the current model is being produced. It costs a lot of money to retool a plant, so why not prepare the new plant to build the next gen Tacoma, while this plant finishes off the current one.

I'm sure Toyota will offer jobs to the current employees, but I doubt they will be UAW backed jobs. NUMMI is the only Toyota plant in America that has ties to the UAW.

These statements from the NY times article pretty much says it all:

So in other words- the high cost of doing business in California was a major factor. Perhaps this will serve as a wakeup call to the state. I've long held the belief that California will eventually chase all the businesses out of the state along with most middle class families simply due to expenses alone.
