*Edit: I think the only tools I am lacking for the job are the special strap-crimp pliers, which we could pick up for not too much. Maybe $20?

 

Depending on your budget, check with CVJ axles in Denver. I got the extended silicone boots and have yet to tear one (had them on my stock length axles too). Higher quality than OEM. Up to you though

 

Brian makes a very good suggestion. I have heard great reviews on the axles from CVJ and you can specify which boots they install for you. They use OEM and rebuild them for you; maybe there are other options besides OEM too, I don't know.

Brian, what's your opinion of the extended silicone boots compared to the stock ones? How many miles do you have on them? Is it pretty clear that the extra length keeps the ribs from rubbing, with a lifted truck?

 

I love my extended silicone ones. On my stock length axles I ran them for probably 16k miles and never tore a boot. The first time after I put my kings on and went wheeling I tore a stock boot.
I even sent my LT extended axles to CVJ so I could get those extended boots. They do not sell the extended silicone boots separately.
The extended silicone boots like I have are $30 more I believe per axle

 

Thanks. I think I saw some extended silicone boots for the factory axles from someone, maybe a year ago. Have you looked for, or found any other boot options out there?

 

I haven't. When I tore that boot I was told to check out CVJ. Really good service and quick

 

Another rep for CVJ. Very happy with the service. Running their axles on both sides now, with the silicone inners (the ones that always tear on our trucks) and neoprene outers. No long term experience tho. This is the first season with them on.

 

Another CVJ rep here. I also bought new axles from CVJ with the extended boots, almost a year ago after the stock ones blew. I just tore both of the extended boots last weekend though. But my angles are steep and I took my long bed up Naches Pass

Well that sucks. I have heard that CVJ will warranty those boots. Might want to give them a call and see if they will do anything for you.

 

I've heard that too. Can't remember how long though... There is a "repeat customer" discount though if you order through them again

Do you remember how much it cost ya to sent out your CV to them? And also how much was it overall if you don't mind me asking? I'm kinda ballin' on a budget right lol.

 

Could be a possibility! Going to contact and few shops to see how much they're going to charge before attempting to do it myself.

 

You have to devise a way to remove the three wheel thing at the end that I think is called the tulip. You are supposed to use a big brass punch and a dead blow hammer, I ended up using a harbor freight chisel and a lot of swear words. A good chisel should have been harder steel than the axle and would have screwed up the axle parts, but good ol' HF steel is super soft crap. The chisel will flake off steel from the tip and dent itself in the process of you wailing on everything, while the axle remains OK. If you insist on the brass punch, pony up for some big bucks and do some searches online, because slim chances of you will find it local.

 

It's something like $250 an axle with $100 core return for the old ones. So ~$150 an axle.
