I've ruined these beautiful shots

I still have to go through all my pictures. Finishing a paper thats due in 2 hours then ill go through them all. Unfortuntely from a quick look they didn't turn out as good as @utroda's

 

My Dad got a nice 6x7 bull over the weekend on our ranch out in Eastern Oregon.

Him and my brother in law followed some very fresh tracks on their way back in Wednesday afternoon (opening day) and caught a glimpse of him for about 10 seconds a long way ahead of them. By the time they got to where they saw him, he was gone.

Friday morning they did the same hunt, saw nothing, and stopped for lunch on top of a canyon. Looked across the canyon (476 yards according the range finder) and saw an elk standing there by itself. Confirmed it was a bull, and my dad took the shot (prone with a bipod) with his .340 WBY Magnum. He missed and could not tell where he hit. Took another shot and missed again, this time seeing he shot just over the back. This shot scared the elk and he started walking directly away from them, and uphill a bit. He shot a third time and hit right below the base of the head (aimed high again, apparently) and dropped him in his tracks.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to be there this year, so I have not seen the rack in person.


He said this picture does not do it justice. Said it's about 4.5' wide, and about 5' tall.

 

Oh man! That kills me he's not doing a full head mount on that!

Hell of a bull!

 

It's getting mounted from the shoulder up. The taxidermist we use is a family friend and charges us very little for a "cape", all things (like the huge pain in the ass of skinning, packing the hide out without damaging it, cleaning it, tanning it, etc.) considered.

Should look pretty cool!

 

I am 99% sure I know what you're talking about. I shook my head slowly in disappointment.

 

Honestly I didn't notice it all day, until i looked at the photos.

 

Is anyone hitting any trails for a day trip in November?

 

I'd like to do a snow run. Hopefully my diff would be broken in by that time

I'm in NE Oregon and willing to help consume the elk...my wife would be happy to help too. Also, my boys are happy to help with consuming any sheds. 2 of them are laid up from knee surgery and being pitbulls, they have strong jaws, as well as a tendency to chew on things.
