Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
If you can find it on Apple, OSMAnd is great

Ive been using OsmAnd and been pretty happy with it. I use it on android though. But doesnt need internet connection. Just have to make sure you download the maps you need. The free version doesnt have all the features but lets you have like 5 free downloads (ie 5 states). Its worked well when ive used it on FS roads

Pick up this - Dual SkyPro GPS Antenna - Amazon Link
Then use any device you want, you can even use WiFi only devices. It connects to your device via bluetooth.

I currently use my older Wifi only iPad with that Antenna, with the LeadNav App and Motion-X. The Antenna is super small and you can mount it anywhere, battery last for months in my cases. I also have dedicated power wired to it the truck.. its just USB.

+1 for OsmAnd. I also use Earthmate(because paired with the InReach), and Hunt by OnXmaps.

I have a handheld Garmin that I don't use anymore because the apps are working out so well.

    That inReach looks bad ass!
Does it act as a GPS similar to a normal handheld Garmin?
Does OsmAnd have access to forest and BLM roads?

No worries, man. King's, light bars and 4WD are so boooooring; front wheel drive is the new mod these days. Chuck that rear driveshaft and don't look back. Did it in my Jeep for years and let me tell ya, if you conquer the trails in FWD people start asking for autographs and pictures with ya.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but in my experience way out on the boonies, I'm not sure how an additional GPS antenna would help you get cell service? They're two different technologies; two different entities. I lose cell service (call/data towers) out in the mountains all the time, but the GPS in my phone still connects full strength (it just shows my position on low-res, un-detailed, cached maps). If you already pre-downloaded full-res/detailed maps, you'd be good to go. Unless you're frequently in an area where you can't get any GPS SAT signals?

My thoughts exactly. And I'm glad to hear I can download maps and have GPS position me on them. Where are you downloading maps from?

I've always just downloaded a selected region via Google Maps before a trip. Seems to work fine for me so far, but I have yet to check out all the other map services.

Just figured out non-cellular iPads can't get GPS outside of wifi. Thus, the "antenna."

I use an InReach, bluetooth connected to my iPad with a few different mapping apps installed. Also doubles as a way to text with people when out of cell service as it uses the Iridium network. Key feature is the "code brown" button in case something happens, can summon emergency response. it's not exactly cheap, but it's already been useful in normal trips, and the wife is happy I have it in case of "code brown"
