Yeah, my bet is either something belt driven or timing chain. But it's hard to tell from the video.

 

That Napa on meridian kicks ass, but they don't stock much. Nice thing about oreillys is that the distributuin center is about 300 yards from my house, and you can will call shit there.

 

It does it on cold starts. Goes away after a while, well it used too. I didn’t leave it running long enough yesterday to tell. My first thought was the ac pulley that’s where it sounded like. There’s some saturated oil right there too.

I did a recent oil change too.

 

Yeah it would be much easier to tell in person. It’s a distinct noise. But hard to locate where it’s comeimg from

 

Hoes are required. I mean a hose is required.

 

The hose are out at the landing today, sheeeeesh. Suns out buns out.

Yeah without hearing it in person, I can't say for sure it's the timing chain, it definitely has a distinct rattle.

 

whats the scheduled mileage for timing chain on 2nd gens? In my old toyota's 125-135k was always time to order that timing chain kit. 22re's would start to run rough around then.

 

What I read they are just replace as needed. Belts are schedule for 150k?? on the 1st gens.

 

Replace when needed. Its not on any sort of schedule. Don't remember on the serpentine belt for our engines but 100k is probably a good number They are only like 25 bucks anyways so every 100k isn't bad. I'm sure you could go longer if you inspected it

 

Toyota says the chain is good for the life of the motor, typically when the chain shits the bed, the motor is toast anyway as they're interference engines. I go by if it's making noise, time to replace. The chains are pretty durable, usually it's the guides or the tensioner that goes out. When the tensioner or guides go out the chain wears into the front cover where there's coolant passages and lead people to believe they have a bad head gasket.

 

Yeah, if the chain dropped it wouldn't start. So at worst it's the tensioner.

 

For you 4runner guys, any of you have issues with the third brake light spoiler thing getting water inside of it and leaking out when you open the rear hatch?

If it’s rod knock it will get worse under load like valve clatter does

Haha! I need more drainage in my system . Mines been overworked by oxalate crystals and kidney stones!

Anyone see any problem draining out the cubbies? I prefer not to drill the bed itself.

 

Which actually @Greddy there's an inspection cover for the timing tensioner just above the power steering pump, known to leak oil also, that you can remove and peak inside. It's a pita to get to.

Also, if the chain was stretched, from what I've read, the ECU detects the tensioner has reached it's limit and will throw a code.

It's next to the blue circle.
