I'm wondering what most are using for trail comms. CB/GMRS/HAM? I need to get something, interested in hearing what people in the area are using.

CB is probably the most common. And pretty nice to have even if you run HAM/GMRS?whatever for when you are on logging roads or just in traffic

CB is common but a good VHF radio is waayyy more clear and easier to get setup. Better range typically too. It sounds like the FCC is going to start cracking down on the Baofeng radios so I would suggest picking one up soon. They are capable of doing the GMRS/FRS frequencies, MURS frequencies as well as across the HAM bands, though transmitting on GMRS and MURS runs afoul of FCC rules.

I currently have this one https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0772FY...&pd_rd_r=906d60a8-a34c-11e9-b9fa-597a26e8a4d3

but plan to also pick this one up while they are still available https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B015D9OQDE/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_2?smid=AA3MGRC7F9EI2&psc=1

I swear @JDAM said the same thing 2yrs ago...

I finally installed a CB in my truck about a month ago or so, but I've been also looking at getting my ham license also. I use the CB for coms between rigs on trips and also monitor for any road reports being exchanged between truckers.

Yeah, it seems like it comes up every year or two. After a little more digging it looks like the thing I saw may have come from the tinfoil hat crowd.

    https://survivalblog.com/baofeng-sales-ban-countdown-continues/

Reading a couple other places it sounds like they are more cracking down on sales/marketing of Baofeng radios with GMRS/FRS frequencies preset on them.

I have the 82 and I think it works well, but I dont have a license, people to talk to or a basic grasp of operating it, so take that with a grain of salt. We used hand held gmrs radios on a two week trip through utah and idaho and they were easy to use but only worked line of sight. I might upgrade to something more powerful with a dedicated outboard antenna

Speaking of Lexus. I'll soon have an LS400. Even though it's a 1991 it'll probably be the nicest car I've ever owned. Only thing wrong is........ It needs a starter and the brainiac engineers at Toyota in the late 80's decided the valley of a V8 below the intake manifold was a great location to put the starter. 210k on it, runs, when you can get it started, drives and is in fair condition. 2 sets of wheels and tires, new battery but ac needs recharged. Interior is ok, driver's seat obviously has seen all of the mileage but isn't horrible.

I wonder what I'll break first with a 250hp v8 rwd full size sedan? :burnrubber:

Oh yeah, if anyone needs to get a hold of me, I'll get you my "center console mobile phone" number and you can reach me directly in the Lexus. #ballinonabudget - that's why they call me BOB. :rimshot:

Least it's a simple job. Just a bunch of unbolting stuff. Might as well pick up new intake gaskets too
