Which license would be applicable to what we want to do? Amateur, general or amateur extra?

Only person i know who’s licensed in @scollins
maybe he can chime in and get us going in the right direction

I just want to use it like a little Motorola talk about ; radio to radio without touching a repeater. Can they be used for that function?

Secondary effect would be the ability to jump on a repeater and summons help in a shtf incident. One worth taking a fine from the FCC.

I made it up there parking just past the bridge on a pull out on the right. They're is a rough trail on the left that switch backs up and then traverses over to the east side of the trestle.

You can use them as the radio to radio type. You just need to program the FRS (family radio service) channels in which are the standard two way, short range, no license needed channels.

There is also GRMS which is another sort of two way radio channels. But you technically need a license to operate on these channels.

The main difference is FRS is limited to 2 watts of broadcast power whereas the GRMS is limited to something crazy like 50 watts. Though most handheld units wont provide that (more like 5-8W)

You can monitor any channels but cant broadcast on them without a license (talking the HAM side). But in an emergency situation you can easily transmit. And honestly long as you arent being an idiot nobody is going to care that you dont have a license. Still a good idea to get one but for just having it around for emergency use....meh

Also picking up the cable to connect it to a computer is a good idea. You can use software like CHIRP to program and name all the channels you want. Better than just having frequencies or trying to do it all on the unit.

Tech, which allows for most of 2m and 70cm should be plenty. I’m just a Tech.

2m/70cm is the typical Portable or HT dual band radios (Amazon Baofengs, Yaseu, Icom, etc).

Might get General or Extra at some point, but I don’t really see myself getting into HF and the superHAMnerd stuff....

Made it up to Gallagher today with a bunch of Jeep guys. About 3-4in of snow on the ground and it was snowing the whole 2 hours we were at the lake. If this keeps up it's going to be done for the year up there already. Not bad today though, just a little slick on the last hill up.
