That's a lot of threaded holes, I can see why it's so much. Buy a sheet of aluminum, some drill bits and taps and get to work? Probably take all damn day

I would assume the company that makes this doesnt have a guy with a ruler and a drill sitting in a warehouse producing these. Can you tap holes with a CNC? But then you would have to program the CNC with a CAD drawing that I don't have, so never mind I guess.

you can tap with a CNC mill. They probably send the specs to the machine shop and they’ll make hundreds of them, the more you have made, the less each of them will cost.

For a one off 250 does not sound bad. You have cost of material and labor rates for the shops I've worked in range from 80-100 dollars an hour.

Good luck. If you're that conscientious about the cost of buying it, making it yourself is your cheapest route.
Plot it out, mark, drill it and tap it using a drill press. Tedious, time consuming task.

Depends how determined you are in "wanting" the end result.
Very time consuming to layout and create by CAD, and milling machine.
You don't "need" a machinist, you need to be creative.

    What's it for, anyway?

I guess technically I "need" qualified information to make a decision and it sounds like I have it. I was just feeling out the reason behind a seemingly high cost. Its for mounting a laptop to a stand or tripod for tethered product photography. They sell a bunch of doodads that screw into the holes in the plate so you can mount external hard drives and all kinds of other stuff.

i can pretty much guarantee you that it’s more efficient to buy something that’s available for sale. 99/100 times you’ll spend more of your money and/or time to make duplicate it. If it’s not custom one-off, just buy it

A large percentile of people are below p50 intelligence then? Lol. Fair point though averages are super skewed. Medians and percentile are generally best in statistics.

Does anyone know where to source these locally in the Seattle area? 1" body with 3/8" pin.

Don't know of anywhere local but thanks for reminding me I need to go order a new one from McMaster-Carr since I broke another one on my swing out last fall.

I think I have the threaded weld on piece floating around at home from the replacement I bought the first time I snapped off the pin. :anonymous:

I can take a look when I get home if you want it.
