I really just would need the driver side axle shaft with the wheel bearing and drum backer plate!

 

lol you’re in the same boat as I am. I ended up buying the parts and taking the axle to auburn off road since apparently no one has he special tool to pop it off.

 

Thats what i'm seeing too, i have a toyota guru friend who works at a machine shop and we found the FSM for doing the job but i see you need the special SST tool or whatever its called

 

if u can get an old axle housing, you can cut it down and basically make the tool. pretty sure there is a youtube vid somewhere showing how to do it

 

that's good to know, makes sense... but i think @Shadowhunter has what i need

 

I put a red goat fab relocate kit on mine...

alot of work but youll end up with alot of space. i have no issues clearing 37's

 

Dorman has these prebuilt axles with backing plates and everything assembled but only for 4runners

we didn’t have an old axle housing so we welded one together and it failed spectacularly lol. Ended up making the welds strong enough but wound up bending 2 of the studs. Dorman makes preassembled axles/hub/backing plates but only for the 4Runner I think. No idea why they don’t have one for the Tacoma.

and my brake shoe was twisted up too.

 

Both my brake shoes are twisted up at the bottom too, bigger problem is the bracket at the bottom pulled through the backing plate

 

yeah you can see in my video my bracket is super loose, almost falling out as well. Stupid drum brakes…

 

I swear I’ve seen some Russian You Tube video where that tool was the star of the show

 

I believe I've asked before but want to double check, where are y'all getting your CMC done? I'm heading south from Bellingham and going to Spokane this Friday, then returning on Tuesday. Would be ideal to make a stop along the way at a shop.

I've already called Mule and they're booked till October..

 

They're the same as far as I'm concerned. Just not for the 2016+ Tacoma's.

Not sure I'd want to make a rock crawler out of an already sought after model that have been selling for silly money even in rough shape. Get it running and a simple respray and it's a 30k plus truck. With all original ones having sold for 45-60k

But I'll still follow the build.


PS...I also only skimmed the video with no sound for now so probably missed stuff he said

 

He addresses that in the video. "It's my truck and I'll do with it what I want". Props to him for not chasing a few $ and instead building himself a badass truck. I saw this one yesterday, yeah it's cool, but afraid to do anything with it

 

O totally his to do whatever with! It'll be a fun truck to play with when done that's for sure. Just wouldn't be my choice for a crawler for multiple reasons outside of just value of what it could be worth.

People who don't use their crap and just let it sit blow my mind. Like cool I just spent a ton buying a lawn ornament (well garage ornament?). I'd rather see the guy butcher it into a rock crawler then a guy restore it and drive it once a year.

 

He also has a flatbed sas 2nd gen that he beats the dog shit out of and considers it "just ok" at off-roading, so I have no doubt the purpose built FJ will go basically anywhere
