Well my girlfriend smoked her rings on her Tacoma. 2008 DCSB 4wd with a rebuilt title and 230,000 miles. Is it worth putting up for sale as a whole for cheap? Or part it out?

 

Cough cough… time for a LS swap.

 

If only she had something to drive in the meantime it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea

 

How do you know it’s piston rings and only that? Reason for salvage? If the frame has been replaced or isn’t rusty that could be a nice project truck for someone to swap a new engine in. Parting out will obviously take much longer and more work. Post some more pics/details

 

it’s been burning oil, Smoking really bad, blow by in the dipstick tube, and now has no power. Hasn’t gotten hot and there’s no missing coolant like if it was a head gasket. Not any knocking, just your usual Tacoma lifter tick. I’m going to run a compression test this weekend. Salvage was from a front end wreck by the previous owner, no frame damage. It’s got fox 2.0 shocks, pretty new BFG AT3 tires, Sherpa rack, upgraded sound system.

 

There are numerous 4.0 available to buy, about $4k, plus whatever labor to swap. Not a viable option?

 

Assuming the work isn’t gonna be self-performed, that’s realistically dumping ~$8-10k into an old truck that already has a junk title… just sayin’

Junk title is only important if trying to sell. I've had many rebuilt title vehicles, it doesn't bother me any, so long as I know the full story. I think it'd be worth spending the money to swap the engine. I'm expecting to have to do it some day, years down the line maybe, but it's not that big of a deal

 

Not exactly. You can usually only get liability insurance. So it would royally suck to spend the cash to fix it only for a tree to fall on it or it getting jacked…
