Here's my brief trip report of Capitol Forest from Sunday:

As I was driving over, it was raining. Raining + target shooting = bleh, so I decided to try doing some wheeling first. Entered via the east and followed the C-line road up.

There was a good amount of snow, but there had been plenty of traffic through to get ruts almost all the way to the gravel. Good thing, because the snow on the side of the road was quite a few feet deep, probably 1/4 way up the door.

Got to the turnoff for the base of the road to the peak (about 2k foot level) and had to rescue a Chevy on low pros. No recovery gear, all in t-shirts  At least the people got stuck in a nice wide spot. Drove around, strapped 'em easy peasy. Got some big drools as I made it look easy :D

Continued on to where the road splits into 3. Middle one takes you to the peak. Didn't quite make it up very far, though. Got this far before I started losing forward momentum. Since it was just me, I decided to call it quits. All hard pack on the road and slick, so it doesn't look deep. Stepping into the ditch on the driver's side of my vehicle will put you knee deep or so

    20130106_121821_zps382dcf83_e57ffee1c0a0056524624789a5c8f11e002fafd7.jpg

Continued back to the 3-way and, based on the advice of some ATVs, took the rightmost split. Had lunch

    20130106_125008_zps044d7fcb_b53b2919fc124b919a57fed934cc57c01fb1b465.jpg

The bottom of that road meets back up with C-Line, and I wanted to make it off to my gun pit in the NW corner of the forest. I didn't know that I could have taken Noshka Rd up to the Rock Candy entrance, and I didn't want to hit the highway and loop over, so I went back up C-Line again. I knew that I could make it over to the west side and then up. On the way, I found a gun pit that was just as good, so decided to stop

Had a good time of shooting soda bottles, iced 'lake' (you can see it in the right of the first of those two pictures), milk bottles. I might need some changes made to the sights, but I'm not too terrible of a shot :)

I didn't want to leave just yet, so I continued on to Porter Creek Camp in the hopes that I could find a way to the south, where I haven't explored. However, it was getting dark by the time I got to the camp so I decided to make it up the NW corner of the forest. There's a road that connects over to the A Line, and from there I can continue up and around to the Rock Candy exit. There's a good little bit of unmaintained road over there that can be fun, but I couldn't find it in the dark, and I was looking to just get home.

Pulled into the house around 6ish and spent the afternoon cleaning guns. Forgot how long that takes :p

Yeah I didn't think about going until late.

Lol that kid in the Angry Birds shirt? My dad had earmuffs pretty close to those. All the interior foam disintegrated and the whole thing became worthless. I'd say that set is probably 40 years old. Crazy to see someone else with them, I was always wearing them as a kid.

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
Nice truck! Welcome to the NW!!!

Hell yeah Mike, looks like you had a pretty successful day! Maybe we can go up there again in a few weekends if nothing else is going on.

Damn Tallon, look at all those rugrats!!! Props for taking the kiddos along for a good time. I loved monster truck rallys when I was a kid. Do they still sell the huge-ass turkey legs there? The ones that make you feel like a true Viking while eating them?

    Grog wench! More Grog!!!

Tahuya is fun, but you can make it through most of it in 2wd. and the damn trees jump out at you.

Well i don't know of any place to go, all the places I used to go (illegally) have been closed down, logged, gated, and dug up... Cap. Forest? I haven't been there in a good 10 years and only on atvs not in a truck.

Tahuya is actually pretty tame, just watch your corners. This time of year, its going to be the most accessible spot. No snow to worry about, just mud and lots of puddles. Theres a rock garden and a loop trail that will fill a day.
Cap forest is illegal for anything but setvice roads, so you really have to hunt for stuff - roads that are not maintained . It does make for a good snow run right now. Im trying to map out the good spots so I can get us an interesting run that doesnt have to be snow dependent.

I think Tahuya would be a good choice. It's not too far, and not too technical.
